Students Deliver Presentation at National IMPACT Conference

Members of Student MOVE presented at the 2015 IMPACT National Conference. Their presentation focused on how service organizations can shape the future of civic engagement.

Members of the Buena Vista University Student MOVE organization (Student Mobilizing Outreach & Volunteer Efforts) attended and presented at the 2015 IMPACT National Conference, Feb. 19-22, hosted by the Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.

The BVU students who presented at the conference were Zachary Ahrens, a senior exercise science-human performance major from Carroll; Caitlin Bach, a senior biology major from Bondurant; Natalie Bellairs, a senior biology major from Osage; Taylor Daniel, a senior exercise science-human performance major from Fairmont, Minnesota; Krislyn Erickson, a junior psychology major from Maurice; Bonnie Keller, a senior biology major from Sioux City; Ryan Mellott, a junior biology major from Westminster, Colorado; Sloane Morrow, a senior elementary education major from Fort Dodge; Kelsey O'Connor, a junior exercise science-human performance and athletic training major from Arvada, Colorado; and Nichole Wiese, a junior elementary education major from Dike.

Their presentation, "Creating Community: The Role of Service Organizations in Shaping the Future" focused on how service organizations, like Student MOVE, can shape the future of civic engagement on college campuses and the communities they work with.

During the conference, the students attended other presentations, participated in service projects and networked with other students, non-profit agencies and graduate schools. They also attended keynote sessions that featured national speakers such as Wendy Spencer, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service.

"By providing students with the opportunity to present at a national conference such as IMPACT, they not only learn the skills for successful presentations, they also get exposure to new ideas and programs and the opportunity to learn from people from all over the nation who share their interests," said Dr. Ashley Farmer-Hanson, assistant dean for student life and director of civic engagement at BVU. "This conference provided students with the opportunity to learn more about who they are and provided them with tools to be successful here on campus and beyond."
