Beavers Spend Special Day with I-Cubs

I-Cubs host gathering of Beaver family

More than 100 Buena Vista University alumni, friends, staff, students, and prospective students came to Principal Park in Des Moines on Aug. 6 to celebrate a BVU day with the I-Cubs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs.

“We had a great time,” said Jared Brostad ’00, of Urbandale, who was joined at the game by his parents John ’73 and Roxie (Click) Brostad ’73, of Storm Lake. “It’s always nice to reconnect with a few classmates while meeting new BVU alumni. I hope BVU will consider doing this regularly!”

Beavers from as far away as Sioux City, Iowa City, Chariton, and Iowa Falls enjoyed hot dogs, hamburgers, and refreshments, watching while BVU Head Baseball Coach Steve Eddie ’00 MSE ’07 was introduced to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. He was joined by 11-year-old AvaMarie Kirby, of Fort Dodge, who was also selected to throw out a first pitch. AvaMarie is the daughter of BVU alum Jobina (Dodge) ’17 and Greg Kirby, a current BVU student.

“We had a wonderful time visiting with alumni whose BVU class years ranged from 1964 to 2023, which is remarkable,” said President Brian Lenzmeier. “Our staff has enjoyed hosting so many of you in events on campus and throughout the region. Each time, we learn more about the ways in which BVU has made a lasting impact. We are so grateful to have the ability to connect with our friends, alumni, and so many more.”

BVU Director of Admissions Conner Ellinghuysen, who helped organized the special day, said he and his staff also appreciated the chance to connect with several incoming first-year Beavers who attended the game with their parents.

“Celebrating a day with the I-Cubs in Des Moines allowed us in a special way to welcome a number of first-year students to the BVU family just a couple of weeks before they join us all on campus in Storm Lake,” Ellinghuysen said. “We had a blast spending time with them and our BVU alumni, friends, and staff members at Principal Park.”

The Beavers return to Des Moines to spend time with hundreds of alumni at the BVU booth in the air-conditioned Varied Industries Building at the Iowa State Fair, Aug. 10-20.
