Beavers Busy Making Homecoming Preparations

Full slate of activities, including an outdoor concert, games, band/choir showcase, and much more on tap.

Hall of Fame inductions, an alumni band concert, Cornerstone Guard honors, and an Alumni Association pregame party are but a few of the attractions in the works to highlight Homecoming at Buena Vista University on Oct. 13-14.

There’s also a home soccer match, a football game, and a band and choir showcase!

BVU Homecoming ’23 begins with an Alumni Panel featuring a number of successful BVU graduates sharing their stories with current students. Additionally, Coach Steve Eddie ’00 MSE ’07 hosts the annual Beaver Baseball Golf Outing at BVU Lake Creek. The baseball team, incidentally, also hosts an intrasquad scrimmage on the evening of Thursday. Oct. 12.

On Friday evening, four individuals and one team are inducted into the BVU Athletics Hall of Fame. Honorees include Jason Evers ’96, Ben Lickteig ’05, Jennifer (Stork) List ’07, Shawn Olorundami ’09, and the 1983 Beaver softball team, which finished second in the NCAA Division III National Tournament.

The Beavers host Dordt on Friday evening in men’s soccer, a game that gives way to an outdoor beer garden and concert featuring Bound 2 Be, a Des Moines-based band founded by BVU students 20 years ago. The band features singer/guitarist Gabe Chamberlin ’04, guitarist/backup vocalist Nick Nystrom ’05, drummer Ryan Barnes, who attended BVU from 2004-06, and bassist Justin Goes.

“I still have a VHS recording of our performance at the first-ever BVU Edgefest in 2004 where we headlined!” Nystrom says. “I have so many great memories from playing at Buenafication Day with Hello Goodbye and Little Mojo, to rocking out over J-term in Edson Hall. We are so excited to come back and play for Homecoming!”

BVU’s Class of 1973 is honored on the 50th anniversary of its graduation during a brunch on Saturday morning. The Alumni Association pregame party begins at the same time with games for children, pictures with Buford T. Beaver and autographs shared by student-athletes. The popular BVU tailgate area will be teeming with alumni and friends throughout the day as the Beavers face Luther College in the Homecoming football contest on Peterson Field.

The Beavers’ conference championship football teams from 1972 and 1973 will both be saluted during the game, while the BVU Athletics Hall of Fame inductees will be formally enshrined at halftime.

A traditional 5th Quarter Fest in Siebens Forum follows the game.

The busy celebration culminates on Saturday evening as the BVU band and choir host a performance showcase in Schaller Memorial Chapel.
