For the second time this season, Buena Vista senior forward/center Wes Nordquist (Adel, Iowa/ADM) has been recognized for the second time this season by the Iowa Conference by being named the IIAC Men’s Basketball Performer of the Week for the period ranging from December 28, 2012 to January 6, 2013.
Nordquist averaged 17.7 points and 11.7 rebounds in three outings (all wins) to help the Buena Vista men’s basketball team (9-3, 1-0 IIAC) extend its current overall win streak to eight games. That’s the longest such streak for the program since chalking up 11 straight victories during the 2008-09 campaign.
In an 86-79 win at the University of Redlands on December 29, he turned in just five points and two rebounds before bouncing back with 20 points and 12 rebounds a day later in a 75-63 win at Pomona-Pitzer. He continued his torrid stretch by turning in a season-high 28 points and a career-best 21 rebounds this past Saturday as the Beavers won its Iowa Conference opener over Simpson College, 82-74. In that contest he shot 9-of-12 from the field and 10-of-12 from the charity stripe.
He now has a league-best seven double-doubles on the year, and the 21 boards were the most for any BVU player since Jamie Wilson grabbed 21 back on February 15, 1997 against Upper Iowa.
Nordquist, who was named the IIAC Male Athlete of the Week back on December 9, 2012, currently leads the IIAC in scoring (18.5ppg) and rebounding (11.1rpg) this season.
He and his teammates return to action on Wednesday, January 9, for an IIAC home contest against Loras College (5-7, 0-1 IIAC). Tip-off inside of Siebens Fieldhouse is set for 8:00pm.
