“...gave me a leg up on many of the other REU students”

Karl Ahrendsen, Class of 2014

Hometown: Clarion, Iowa
Majors: Physics and Computer Science/Mathematics
Internship: Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program at Duke University

“Dr. Stone helped tremendously in preparing me for my REU experience at Duke University. He stressed that physics research today is heavily involved with computer science and encouraged me to take classes to become knowledgeable in that area. This gave me a leg up on many of the other REU students who had little to no programming experience before starting the program. The experience also made me more certain that I want to go to graduate school once I am done at BV. I enjoyed the process of doing research, but more importantly, I have learned more about what it means to be a graduate student.”

“...it established my versatility”

Keith Johnson, Class of 2012

Hometown: Hartley, Iowa
Major: Computational Physics
Internship: Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program at Montana State University

“I feel as though the REU experience really grounded my position as a quality graduate school candidate. I believe that it established my versatility throughout the sciences, which graduate schools took note of.  On a personal level, the REU experience is most responsible for making me aware of just how much I love science in general. I became a much more curious individual after this experience.”
