White Hall Update

Thank you to all those individuals, student organizations, and departments that assisted with the removal of the furniture from White Hall. Over 200 beds, dressers and desks were removed and donated to a variety of non-profit organizations and shelters from several locations in Iowa.

Work has already begun in White Hall for an expected completion in August. Demolition of the restrooms, interior walls, and heating/cooling pipes will begin next week.

Thanks also to the students for being so patient and helpful with the move from White Hall to Pierce Hall. The entire process went very smoothly thanks to the cooperation from the White Hall residents and outstanding organization from the Resident Life staff.

Student Payroll Cutoff

BVU Jazz/Showchoir Auditions

Auditions for BVU Jazz/Showchoir are Monday & Tuesday, Feb 6 & 7. Students may pick up audition materials in the workroom of Edson Hall. Audition times are 12:15, 2:30 and 3:50 each day. Two rehearsals per week for the ensemble will be set after membership is determined. Contact Dr. Keeler with questions.

Outdoor Recreation Den Hours and Office Hours

The Intramurals, Recreation, and Outdoor Adventure Den has new hours. Operating hours will be from 2-8pm Sunday through Friday and Noon-6pm on Saturdays. Joe Pearson will also have office hours for check-out and consulting from 11am-2pm Monday through Friday for the Spring Semester. Spring Break Service Trip—Red River Gorge, KY

What are you doing for Spring Break? Join Outdoor Rec for a 7 day trip to Red River Gorge in Daniel Boone National Forest, Kentucky, home of some of the world’s best natural bridges and beautiful canyons. You will have the opportunity to explore this unique area, rock climb, canoe, and participate in a trail restoration program with the National Forest Service. Spelunking Service Trip

Yes, we are headed back underground! February 24th-26th, departing from the Outdoor Recreation Den at 5pm. Thanks to our great relationship with Karst Preserves, we have exclusive access to two cave systems in southeast Minnesota. Join us for an exciting exploration of Holy Grail and Spring Valley Caverns; as well as a helping with a service project in one of the caves on Sunday. No experience is necessary. Headlamps, lodging, transportation, and food are provided. Fee is $20 per person. Sign-up in the Underground or Outdoor Recreation Den.

Extreme Winter Festival 2012

Extreme Winter Festival is back again! Storm Lake United and BVU have teamed up with a lot of new community members to have a bigger and better winter festival over the weekend of February 10-12. Events include Broomball Tourney, Ice Hockey Tourney, Snow Sculpture, Snowshoe Obstacle Course, live music at King’s Pointe, Ice Fishing, and even an Indoor Triathlon. Intramurals—Winter Season

3 on 3 Basketball (M/W), Futsal (Coed), and Racquetball (M/F; S/D) are the intramural sports available during the Winter Season at BVU. The seasons will run from February 14th to March 29th. Registration sheets are now available in the Underground. Please fill out completely and return to appropriate envelop in the Underground. Brackets will be emailed to teams through team captains. Dell Laptops for Sale

Used Dell Latitude D830 laptops will be available for sale for $125 each beginning February 8th at 7:30 am. This special sale will end on February 14th at 5pm or until sold out. This is the last chance to purchase these used Dell laptops! Purchase by stopping by or calling the BVU Business Office (DE 103 or 749-2041) during office hours. We will ship the laptops for $15 each if needed. (Laptops are sold "as-is" with no remaining warranty, no service after the sale, and no technical support offered by BVU.)

MCAT, PCAT, OAT, and DAT Prep Program

This semester, we will begin offering a prep program for students who plan to take the MCAT (medical), the PCAT (pharmacy), the OAT (optometry), or the DAT (dental). The purpose of this program is to provide students with a structured opportunity to prepare for the exams, get guidance from faculty and staff in the specific fields of study covered by each exam, and develop a support system with other students taking these same exams. Students who are testing in late spring, summer, or early fall will benefit the most from this program, but it is open to all students planning to test during the current calendar year. This program will meet each Wednesday evening during the spring semester. If you are interested in participating in this program and you plan to take one of the four exams mentioned above sometime this year, please contact Jennifer McNabb (mcnabb2@bvu.edu) for more information.

ISU, USD, Creighton Health Science, Drake Law on campus

Thinking about graduate or professional school after BV? You'll have an opportunity to meet admissions reps from Iowa State University, Drake Law School, the University of South Dakota, and Creighton School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences over the dinner hour on Monday, Feb. 13. They will have information to share with you about their respective programs. They'll be stationed in the Ball Room from 5:15 - 6:30 on Monday, February 13. Willard Stief Award Nominations

Willard Stief Award Nominations are now being accepted for the 2012 Willard Stief Memorial Award. This award was established in honor of Willard Stief, former Superintendent of Plant and Maintenance, by his family and friends following his unexpected death in 1981. This award recognizes two resident students (one male and one female) who have positively contributed to community life in the residence halls. It is based on leadership, commitment to residence hall life at BVU and scholarship. Criteria for selection include: involvement in residence hall activities, evidence of good citizenship, a GPA of 2.5 or above and sophomore, junior or senior standing. Nominations for this award come from individual residence hall students, hall councils, resident advisors, housekeepers, maintenance, etc. Students may submit a nomination online here: http://tinyurl.com/6o78bxx. The nomination form will be active until February 17, 2012 by noon. Winners of the award will be presented with a certificate and a check at the Recognition Banquet on Saturday, April 28,2012.

Operation AWOL Auction

Come support AWOL by bidding on a wide range of donated items from businesses around Storm Lake. This will be a silent auction will be held in Forum Room 9 February 9th and t and winners will be notified through email. Items range from tie-blankets to gift baskets. Proceeds will help support AWOL participants on their alternative spring break trips. Student Director Needed for Spring Play

This semester, Dr. Wind Goodfriend will be directing the new play, “Voices of Hope,” an hour long show that highlights issues of relationship violence using nine true-life stories from a variety of former victims (both men and women). The play’s message is that people who experience violence are affected by the experience, but not defined by it; these voices have come through the journey as stronger, more compassionate individuals. This hopeful play will be performed in the Underground and will cast students, staff, faculty, and community members. The structure of the show is similar to “The Vagina Monologues.” Dr. Goodfriend is currently looking for a student co-director for the show. The co-director will help coordinate auditions, rehearsals, blocking, costumes, and every aspect of the show. As a reminder MILS 160 is open to everyone on campus as a class. You do not need to be part of the ROTC program to participate in the class. This is graded A-F class that may be taken up to 8 times. Scripts for "Doubt" Available for Checkout

BVU Theatre presents "Doubt," a searing play that examines belief, certainty and the spaces where doubt exists, this spring in April. Auditions are coming up in February, and scripts are now available for checkout from Dr. Bethany Larson in DE 202 C for anyone wishing to audition. Scholars Day Grant Deadline Extended to Feb. 6

The Scholars Day Grant application deadline of this Friday, Feb. 3, has been extended until Monday, Feb. 6. These grants are available for students who anticipate expenses in preparing presentations for Scholars Day this year, which is MONDAY APRIL 30 - mark the date! Students may apply for up to $200 per project to fund equipment, materials, fieldwork or other necessary expenses. To apply for a Scholars Day Grant, please provide on a single page: 1. a brief description of the project plan, 2. list of expected expenses, 3. statement of commitment to use grant exclusively for Scholars Day, 4. your signature, 5. signature of supporting faculty sponsor. Cross Country Ski Workshop

Monday, February 6th, at 4pm there will be a XC Ski Workshop offered. This is a chance for beginners to learn a new winter activity and others to get back at it. Weather dependent! Sign-up available in the Underground. Space limited to 6 people. Free. We will be meeting at the Outdoor Recreation Den on the 6th. Dress for outside activity.

BVU STUDENTS! It is that time of year again...time for our annual "BEST PINK COSTUME CONTEST"! Find your pink clothes and dress up for the Breast Cancer Awareness Event at Siebens Fieldhouse on Saturday, February 11th during the 6:00 & 8:00 p.m. basketball games! During 1/2 time of the men's game, five contestents will be drawn to compete for the title of "Best Pink Costume" and the fans will be the ones to choose the winner! Prizes will be awarded! Think PINK Event on February 11th

Beaver Fans! Once again, BVU Athletics is joining with the WBCA to host our annual "pink out" event to raise funds to fight breast cancer! The Play 4Kay Breast Cancer Event will take place in Siebens Fieldhouse on Saturday, February 11th during the 6:00 & 8:00 p.m. basketball games. In addition to the many door and raffle prizes, this year, in our attempt to raise more funds, there will also be a silent auction, which will include items such as overnight accommodations at local motels, newspaper subscriptions, gift certificates, 2012-13 athletics season pass memberships, as well as pool, walking and spin class memberships. Gift baskets from local salons and Younkers, a BVU football jersey, five 1-hour training sessions with BVU Strength Coach, Ron Thomson, (who has worked with NFL athletes such as Drew Brees) a professional photography sitting, Titleist Pro VIX BVU Logo golf balls, BVU athletic apparel, Kings Pointe Waterpark Passes and much more! The Alumni Association Student Board will be distributing BVU rally rags to the first 100 students in the gym for the basketball games this Saturday, February 4th. The women's game starts at 4:00 PM, and the men's game starts at 6:00 PM. Come out and support the BVU basketball teams!

BVU's Phonathon program is looking for personable, dependable, detail-oriented students to join the team as new callers. Callers gain valuable communication skills, network with alumni and serve as ambassadors for BVU. Located on the third floor of the library, Phonathon gives you the ability to set your own schedule and work with a friendly team. Both work study and non work study positions are available.
