Auditions for BVU Jazz/Showchoir are Monday & Tuesday, Feb 6 & 7. Students may pick up audition materials in the workroom of Edson Hall. Audition times are 12:15, 2:30 and 3:50 each day. Yes, we are headed back underground! February 24th-26th, departing from the Outdoor Recreation Den at 5pm. Thanks to our great relationship with Karst Preserves, we have exclusive access to two cave systems in southeast Minnesota. Join us for an exciting exploration of Holy Grail and Spring Valley Caverns; as well as a helping with a service project in one of the caves on Sunday. No experience is necessary. Headlamps, lodging, transportation, and food are provided. Fee is $20 per person. Sign-up in the Underground or Outdoor Recreation Den.

Extreme Winter Festival is back again! Storm Lake United and BVU have teamed up with a lot of new community members to have a bigger and better winter festival over the weekend of February 10-12. Events include Broomball Tourney, Ice Hockey Tourney, Snow Sculpture, Snowshoe Obstacle Course, live music at King’s Pointe, Ice Fishing, and even an Indoor Triathlon. MCAT, PCAT, OAT, and DAT Prep Program

This semester, we will begin offering a prep program for students who plan to take the MCAT (medical), the PCAT (pharmacy), the OAT (optometry), or the DAT (dental). The purpose of this program is to provide students with a structured opportunity to prepare for the exams, get guidance from faculty and staff in the specific fields of study covered by each exam, and develop a support system with other students taking these same exams. Students who are testing in late spring, summer, or early fall will benefit the most from this program, but it is open to all students planning to test during the current calendar year. This program will meet each Wednesday evening during the spring semester. If you are interested in participating in this program and you plan to take one of the four exams mentioned above sometime this year, please contact Jennifer McNabb (mcnabb2@bvu.edu) for more information.

Willard Stief Award Nominations

Willard Stief Award Nominations are now being accepted for the 2012 Willard Stief Memorial Award. This award was established in honor of Willard Stief, former Superintendent of Plant and Maintenance, by his family and friends following his unexpected death in 1981. This award recognizes two resident students (one male and one female) who have positively contributed to community life in the residence halls. It is based on leadership, commitment to residence hall life at BVU and scholarship. Criteria for selection include: involvement in residence hall activities, evidence of good citizenship, a GPA of 2.5 or above and sophomore, junior or senior standing. Nominations for this award come from individual residence hall students, hall councils, resident advisors, housekeepers, maintenance, etc. Students may submit a nomination online here: http://tinyurl.com/6o78bxx. The nomination form will be active until February 17, 2012 by noon. Winners of the award will be presented with a certificate and a check at the Recognition Banquet on Saturday, April 28,2012.

Student Director Needed for Spring Play

This semester, Dr. Wind Goodfriend will be directing the new play, “Voices of Hope,” an hour long show that highlights issues of relationship violence using nine true-life stories from a variety of former victims (both men and women). The play’s message is that people who experience violence are affected by the experience, but not defined by it; these voices have come through the journey as stronger, more compassionate individuals. This hopeful play will be performed in the Underground and will cast students, staff, faculty, and community members. The structure of the show is similar to “The Vagina Monologues.” Dr. Goodfriend is currently looking for a student co-director for the show. The co-director will help coordinate auditions, rehearsals, blocking, costumes, and every aspect of the show. Scholars Day Grant Deadline Extended to Feb. 6

The Scholars Day Grant application deadline of this Friday, Feb. 3, has been extended until Monday, Feb. 6. These grants are available for students who anticipate expenses in preparing presentations for Scholars Day this year, which is MONDAY APRIL 30 - mark the date! Students may apply for up to $200 per project to fund equipment, materials, fieldwork or other necessary expenses. To apply for a Scholars Day Grant, please provide on a single page: 1. a brief description of the project plan, 2. list of expected expenses, 3. statement of commitment to use grant exclusively for Scholars Day, 4. your signature, 5. signature of supporting faculty sponsor. Find your pink clothes and dress up for the Breast Cancer Awareness Event at Siebens Fieldhouse on Saturday, February 11th during the 6:00 & 8:00 p.m. basketball games! Beaver Fans! Once again, BVU Athletics is joining with the WBCA to host our annual "pink out" event to raise funds to fight breast cancer! The Play 4Kay Breast Cancer Event will take place in Siebens Fieldhouse on Saturday, February 11th during the 6:00 & 8:00 p.m. basketball games. In addition to the many door and raffle prizes, this year, in our attempt to raise more funds, there will also be a silent auction, which will include items such as overnight accommodations at local motels, newspaper subscriptions, gift certificates, 2012-13 athletics season pass memberships, as well as pool, walking and spin class memberships. Gift baskets from local salons and Younkers, a BVU football jersey, five 1-hour training sessions with BVU Strength Coach, Ron Thomson, (who has worked with NFL athletes such as Drew Brees) a professional photography sitting, Titleist Pro VIX BVU Logo golf balls, BVU athletic apparel, Kings Pointe Waterpark Passes and much more! We will get to snowshoe, break trail, sled, go on night hikes, and enjoy the serenity of the outdoors this winter. This is a great trip for anyone looking to get out and enjoy winter—with no experience necessary, just warm clothes. We will be staying overnight in the heated cabins available at Ponca State Park. With numerous new students moving to campus for the upcoming semester, many double rooms that currently only have one person residing in them are in jeopardy of being assigned a roommate. New roommates are assigned to spaces in accordance to new student’s housing preferences and room availabilities on campus. If you do not wish to be assigned a new roommate in the near future, contact the Residence Hall Director responsible for the building where you live in order to start the process to pick a student to fill the vacancy in the room that you currently reside in. Single options will also be available in February once all new students have moved to campus and the total occupancy of all the residence halls has been determined. More information on the Residence Life Contract can be found on the Residence Life website under the room draw tab.

Willard Stief Award Nominations

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2012 Willard Stief Memorial Award. This award was established in honor of Willard Stief, former Superintendent of Plant and Maintenance, by his family and friends following his unexpected death in 1981. This award recognizes two resident students (one male and one female) who have positively contributed to community life in the residence halls. It is based on leadership, commitment to residence hall life at BVU and scholarship. Criteria for selection include: involvement in residence hall activities, evidence of good citizenship, a GPA of 2.5 or above and sophomore, junior or senior standing. Nominations for this award come from individual residence hall students, hall councils, resident advisors, housekeepers, maintenance, etc. Students may submit a nomination online here: http://tinyurl.com/6o78bxx. The nomination form will be active until February 17, 2012 by noon. Winners of the award will be presented with a certificate and a check at the Recognition Banquet on Saturday, April 28,2012.

An Alternative Spring Break of Service (AWOL) Omelet Breakfast Fundraiser will be held, Sunday, Feb 5, 2012 from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 1507 East Lakeshore Drive. Proceeds will assist Buena Vista University students who will be traveling to Chicago, IL March 31 thru April 8 for a hands-on Urban Plunge working with a variety of people and programs design to turn lives around within the inner city. The group of 12 students, plus two advisors will be offering daily volunteer labor and service outreach thru the efforts of the First Christian Church of Chicago. The open enrollment Voluntary Life Insurance forms that were distributed and returned to Human Resources in December had the incorrect guaranteed issue amount for spouse/domestic partner voluntary life insurance. The form listed $}30,000 has a guaranteed issue amount; however the correct guaranteed issue amount is $50,000.
