Buena Vista University student Drew Beall has officially qualified for the 2018 NCAA Division III (DIII) Outdoor Track & Field Championships after a career-best discus throw of 49.45 meters at the Augustana Twilight last chance meet in Rock Island, Ill. on May 17.
Although Beall is headed to nationals in the discus, he first saw success throwing the shot put. "He held our school record as a true freshman in the shot put indoors," said Shane Maier, assistant track & field coach (throws) at BVU. "He also broke his own school record indoors as a sophomore."
“Drew’s hard work, his determination to want to be successful, his dedication to track and field – he puts the same effort into track and field as he does with his academics and it shows.”Shane Maier
Beall's discus toss is ranked 17th in DIII with the top-20 individual marks selected to take part in the championships. He is the program's first outdoor national qualifier since BVU graduate, Seth Woodson, competed in the 800 meter run in 2015 and placed seventh. Beall looks to become the program's first-ever All-American in the discus throw.
The championships will be held May 24-26 at the Veteran’s Memorial Field Sports Complex in La Crosse, Wis. Beall, who is a junior computer science and business double major from Anamosa, will toss at 11 a.m. on May 24.
“Drew’s hard work, his determination to want to be successful, his dedication to track and field – he puts the same effort into track and field as he does with his academics and it shows,” added Maier. “He continues to improve and continues to show his versatility.”
