The recent “One Day without Shoes” event on the Buena Vista University campus generated over $790 from t-shirt sales and other donations which is being presented to two non-profit organizations.
This was be the second year that BVU students have hosted the event as part of the national effort sponsored by TOMS Shoes, a company that matches every pair of its shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes that it gives to a child in need.
Proceeds were donated to Upper Des Moines Opportunity ($495) and "Love Takes Root," ($295) a Spencer-based organization that sponsors an orphanage in Haiti, to help buy shoes for needy children. Of the amount presented to Upper Des Moines, $200 was raised by teachers at the Alta Elementary School as a gift on behalf of Principal Stacey Cole who is relocating to Fort Dodge for a new position.
Student MOVE (Mobilizing Outreach and Volunteer Efforts), a BVU organization that coordinates student service activities; Human Performance Service Organization (HIPSO), Student Activities Board (SAB), and Oxfam America collaborated to host the event.
