Campus Community Challenged to Complete 10 Hours of Service

Nov. 9, 2012

Next spring, Buena Vista University will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of Buenafication Day, its annual day of service on campus and in the Storm Lake community.

In leading up to the celebration in April, Student MOVE, the campus organization that coordinates service activities, has issued a challenge to all members of the BVU community to commit to 10 hours of volunteer service prior to Buenafication Day. There are no restrictions on the types of volunteer service performed.

“By completing this challenge, we hope students will get a taste of how much they can help themselves and others at the same time so that they will want to continue serving. Even just one hour of service a week can have a big impact,” says April Allen, a MOVE vice president who is overseeing the Ten-Hour Challenge. She is a senior history and digital media double major from Sioux City.

On Buenafication Day classes are dismissed for the day and students, faculty and staff can join in service projects. The day had its early beginnings in 1913 as “Hobo Day.”
