BVU Graduate's Art Work Accepted for NCECA National Student Juried Exhibition

Apr. 16, 2013

Kristen Tripp, a 2011 alumna of Buena Vista University and now a second-year graduate student at Wichita State University, had one of her ceramic works accepted to the highly competitive 2013 National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) National Student Juried Exhibition.

The exhibition was hosted by The Glassell School of Art of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas, Feb. 15 – March 23 in conjunction with the NCECA's 47th annual conference. Approximately 500 works were submitted for the exhibit, with 54 selected by the jurors.

While a student at BVU, Kristen double majored in art education and communication/ graphic design. She was selected for several scholarships, including the President's Scholarship. She was named art senior of the year and won the fine arts award, as well as student leadership honors. Her hometown is Schaller.

"My experience at BVU was pretty amazing; the art professors and other students were my family and everyone was extremely supportive in the development of our artwork," she says. "I think it gave us all confidence to explore our ideas to the fullest extent."

"Professors Dave Boelter, Mary Mello-Nee, and Rebecca Frates were always there for us personally and professionally. They are practicing artists who worked alongside us," she adds. "If it weren't for the confidence and knowledge they were able to give me, I probably wouldn't have been brave enough to use non-traditional media and to send to national exhibitions, but they taught me to be confident in my decisions."

Kristen's work has also been exhibited at galleries in Wichita, Kansas.

After receiving her graduate degree in ceramics in May 2014, Kristen wants to get a job teaching at a small university or take part in a residency in the United States or another country.
