Buena Vista overcame a late 10-point deficit to get as close as 65-62, but the University of Dubuque scored 11 of the game’s final 17 points to hang on and edge the Beavers on Saturday afternoon, 76-68.
Junior Susan Kies (Fonda, Iowa/Newell-Fonda) made 7-of-13 attempts from the field, including two more three-point buckets to finish with a team-leading 19 points. Sophomore Becca Pennington (Mt. Ayr, Iowa/Mt. Ayr) matched a career-high with four three-point shots and followed with 14 points. Tara Lehner (Le Mars, Iowa/Le Mars) dished out a team-high four assists, while also grabbing a team-best 11 rebounds.
As a team, BVU shot 39 percent for the game and made just 16-of-26 attempts from the charity stripe.
The Spartans led by as many as eight in the opening half, which was virtually back-and-forth. The Beavers made a late run and took their first lead of the game at 27-26 with 3:27 remaining. A three-pointer from Kies then pushed it to four before Dubuque rattled off five straight points to take a 31-30 halftime lead.
The second half was much of the same with five lead changes over the first four minutes. BVU held a slim 47-42 lead with 12:47 to play before the Spartans went on a 21-4 run over the next five minutes to build their largest lead of the game at 62-51.
BVU, however, slowly chipped away at the lead and got as close as 65-62 with four minutes to go before Dubuque ran off eight straight to back up double-digits.
Buena Vista dips to 7-7 overall (0-3 IIAC) and will remain on the road for a 6:00pm contest at Luther College on Wednesday night.
