La Crosse, Wis.
Sophomore Seth Woodson (Dysart, Iowa/Union) highlighted the night for the Buena Vista track and field team on Thursday night by placing third in the 800 meter run in a school-record time during the UW-La Crosse National Qualifying Meet.
Woodson, who took second at last weekend’s Iowa Conference Outdoor Championships, now has a leg up on his head coach, Jeff Brennan, as he erased Brennan’s school record of 1:52.14 by reaching Thursday’s finish line in a time of 1:51.52. That record had stood since 2001.
At the 2012 IIAC Outdoor Championships, Woodson came within two seconds of the mark after running his personal-best time of 1:53.20. His new personal-best and school-record time is now the 11th-fastest in Division III this season and could secure him a spot in this year’s NCAA DIII Outdoor Championships. That official list is scheduled to be released on Saturday, May 18.
In addition to Woodson, a handful of other Beavers also took part in Thursday’s event. Sophomore Maggie Marker (Clarion, Iowa/Clarion-Goldfield) took ninth in the prelims of the 100 meter dash (12.60) and was eighth overall in the 200 meter dash (25.33) – a time that also marked her finish at the IIAC Championships where she took second.
Fellow sophomore Holly Nuetzman (Wall Lake, Iowa/East Sac County) was 11th in the 400 meter dash, coming within three-tenths of her personal-best time set last week.
Senior Rachel Burnette (Irwin, Iowa/IKM-Manning) took 15th in the 100 meter hurdles prelims (15.71) and ran a new career-best time in the 400 meter hurdles (1:03:23), to take fourth. That time bettered her previous best of 1:03.87 from last week’s IIAC Championships where she was second.
The 4x100 meter relay team of Casey James (Lenox, Iowa/Orient-Macksburg), Laura Eberly (Manning, Iowa/IKM-Manning), Katie Larsen (Glenwood, Iowa/Glenwood) and Marker ran a season-best time of 48.14 and placed fifth.
On the men’s side, Garrett Woodson (Dysart, Iowa/Union) placed 18th in the 800 meter run, but ran a season-best time of 1:56.76.
Senior Andrew Smith (Brayton, Iowa/Exira) was eighth in the 400 meter hurdles (54.49), but less than a second out of a top-three spot. Fellow senior Bo Darrow (Glenwood, Iowa/Glenwood) took fourth in the javelin with his toss of 52.15 meters – which came on his third attempt of the prelims.
The 4x400 meter relay team of Garrett Woodson, Seth Woodson, Ryan Eberly (Manning, Iowa/IKM-Manning) and Smith captured a seventh-place finish in 3:25.03.
If Woodson secures his spot in the NCAA DIII Championships, that event will take place from May 23-25 right back at La Crosse, Wis.
