Storm Lake, Iowa
The Buena Vista basketball teams have combined to win 13 of their last 14 games overall this season, and each will look to carry that momentum into their respective Iowa Conference openers this Saturday afternoon, January 5, 2013, against Simpson College inside of Siebens Fieldhouse.
The BVU women (7-4) have not played since having their six-game win streak halted by Cal Lutheran out in Thousand Oaks, Calif., back on December 16. Four of the team’s six wins prior to that contest were won by at least 10 points, including a road victory at NAIA #25 College of St. Mary on December 13.
The Simpson women (10-1) are ranked 14th in the latest D3hoops.com poll. The Storm began the year with nine straight wins before splitting a pair of games during the Land of Magic Classic down in Daytona Beach, Fla., on December 28 and 29. The loss came against ninth-ranked Amherst, 62-60.
Buena Vista, which missed out on the IIAC Tournament for the first time ever in 2011-12, enters Saturday’s contest as the IIAC leader in scoring offense, while the Storm rank third. Simpson’s Kate Nielsen is the league’s leading scorer at 21.4ppg, while Buena Vista’s Susan Kies (Fonda, Iowa/Newell-Fonda) is fourth (16.4ppg).
BVU is also the league-leader in three-point field goals (86) and is 12th nationally, averaging eight makes per contest. Simpson is second in the league with 71 makes, as no other conference team has made 60.
Tip-off between the two teams is scheduled for 2:00pm in Storm Lake.
On the men’s side, the Beavers (8-3) will take the court riding a seven-game win streak; marking their longest such streak since winning 11 in a row during the 2008-09 campaign. They will be going up against a Simpson team that is currently 4-7 overall and has dropped three of its last four games overall.
Buena Vista, picked to finish second in this year’s IIAC Coaches Poll, topped the Storm, 86-70, during last year’s IIAC Tournament semifinal round en route to capturing the program’s seventh tournament title. BVU senior Wes Nordquist (Adel, Iowa/ADM) currently leads all IIAC players in both scoring (17.6ppg) and rebounding (10.2).
Dating back to last season, the Beavers have won nine of their last 11 Iowa Conference outings, including three straight.
Simpson had won six straight in the series before BVU’s IIAC Tournament victory.
Tip-off between the two teams is scheduled for 4:00pm in Storm Lake. The junior varsity men's teams will begin the day with an 11:30am contest.
