An RBI single in the 13th inning by junior Weston Foxx broke a 3-3 tie and eventually lifted the Buena Vista baseball team to a thrilling 4-3 victory over Central College in game one on Friday afternoon. The Dutch, however, salvaged a doubleheader split by bouncing back with a 3-1 triumph in game two.
Just as it did on Tuesday at Coe College, the Beavers jumped out to the early lead, getting an RBI single from Brandon Wessels in the first inning for a 1-0 lead.
The advantage jumped to 3-0 in the third when junior Joe Paletta singled home a run before he later came around to score after an error and a fielder’s choice.
The Dutch cut the deficit to one with a pair of fifth-inning runs and were down to their last out of the game before coming through with an RBI double in the seventh to force extra innings.
That proved to be the last run until Foxx’s game-winner six innings later.
Foxx finished with two of the team’s nine hits in the contest, as did fellow junior Ryan Titman.
Junior Jon Ringblom pitched the first eight innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, while striking out seven and walking four. Sophomore Jake Bjorkgren went the final five innings in relief to pick up his second win of the year. He surrendered just two hits and struck out three.
Central pushed across a single run in each of the first three innings and it proved to be just enough. BVU had chalked up the first run – again in the first inning – but couldn’t come through with the clutch hit the rest of the way.
One of the team’s best chances came in the fourth inning when it had the bases loaded and one out, but Central turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat.
Wessels went 2-for-3 with the lone RBI for BVU, which had its three-game winning streak snapped.
Ian Grigsby got the start and dips to 0-3 with the loss, allowing two earned runs on five hits over 2.2 innings of work.
Buena Vista is now 17-15 overall and will go after the series win on Saturday when the team takes on the Dutch for two more games beginning with game one at 1:00pm.
