The Buena Vista women’s basketball team couldn’t overcome a cold shooting night on Wednesday, connecting on only 31 percent from the floor, including just 3-of-16 from downtown, and the Beavers were handed an 88-63 loss at Luther College (10-5, 2-2 IIAC).
Senior Brooke Wehle made just 3-of-10 attempts from the floor, but did connect on all eight of her free-throw attempts to lead the way with 15 points. Freshman Lexi Fisher (Glenwood, Iowa/Glenwood) followed with 11 points, while sophomore Becca Pennington (Mt. Ayr, Iowa/Mt. Ayr) added 10 points.
Senior Tara Lehner (Le Mars, Iowa/Le Mars) came within a point of a double-double, scoring nine points and grabbing a team-leading 11 rebounds. Fellow senior Heather Hansman (Westside, Iowa/Ar-We-Va) came off the bench and played a season-high 21 minutes, while matching her career-high with eight rebounds.
BVU scored the first two points of the game, but the lead was short-lived as the Norse ran off 15 straight points to build a 13-point lead just six minutes in. They later pushed the margin to 20-6 and went up 34-19 with under six minutes left in the first half. The Beavers tried to keep within striking distance, trailing by just 14 with over two minutes left, but Luther closed with six straight points to take a 46-26 lead at the half.
Eight straight points to start the second half by the Norse put them up by 28 points and they led by as many as 33. BVU did fight back, getting as close as 17 with over five minutes left, but Luther closed strong to post the 25-point margin.
Luther, which shot just under 40 percent from the field, had two players finish with double-doubles on the night.
BVU is now 7-8 overall (0-4 IIAC) and will host Wartburg College on Saturday afternoon with tip-off scheduled for 2:00pm.
