Softball Rallies for 5-3 Win over UW-River Falls

Mar. 25, 2013

Clermont, Fla.

The Buena Vista softball team scored three runs in the top of the sixth to rally from a 3-0 deficit before adding two more in the eighth to knock of UW-River Falls in a game that started on Sunday and ended earlier Monday morning.  The start of the game was pushed back more than two hours because of a schedule change forced due to inclement weather in the area earlier in the afternoon.

The Falcons scored single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings to lead 3-0 before BVU got its offense going in the sixth.  Jessy Bibler (Alta, Iowa/Alta) walked to lead off the frame before advancing to second on a single to left from Brooke Berkey (Colfax, Iowa/Colfax-Mingo).  After a strikeout, Stephanie Hayden (Prairie City, Iowa/PCM) got the Beavers on the board with an RBI single to right followed by a game-tying two-run triple from Sam Engleman (Hawarden, Iowa/West Sioux) to right center.

The Beavers nearly took the lead one batter later, but Jessica Stocker (Des Moines, Iowa/Carlisle) lined into a double-play, forcing Engleman at third to end the inning.

UW-River Falls threatened in the seventh, getting a one-out double, and a two-out single to put runners at second and third.  Freshman Jenna Falline (Newell, Iowa/Newell-Fonda), however, induced a ground out to second to end the frame, leading to the extra-inning drama.

The International rule was in effect, so the Beavers began the eighth with Mikaela Millslagle (Lamoni, Iowa/Lamoni) going to second.  Bibler followed with a single to move Millslagle to third.  A wild pitch then scored Millslagle and sent Bibler all the way to third.  Two outs later, Bibler made it a two-run game when she also scored on a wild pitch.

The Falcons then began the bottom of the frame with a runner at second, but Falline got three straight ground outs to end the threat and give the Beavers a win in their first game since March 3.

Hayden turned in two of the team’s six hits in the contest, to go along with one RBI and a run scored.

Falline went the distance, allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits, while striking out five and walking two.  She’s now 3-1 on the year with a pair of complete games.

The loss was only the third for UW-River Falls in 12 games this season.

Buena Vista improves to 4-3 and will return to action on Monday for a pair of games, beginning with a 1:00pm contest against Merrimack College (Mass.).  The Beavers will then wrap up the day against Carthage College at 3:00pm.
