Buena Vista senior wide receiver Logan Lehrkamp (Carroll, Iowa/Carroll) and senior running back John Hill (Webster City, Iowa/Webster City) have each been selected to play in the 4th Annual Tazón de Estrellas (Bowl of the Stars) in Mexico on Saturday, December 15, 2012.
The Tazón de Estrellas, which is organized by global football, was established after the Aztec Bowl came to an end in 2007. The event has produced three notable players over the years who have since gone on to put together elite NFL careers in Buffalo Bills running back Fred Jackson (Coe College; 2002), Washington Redskins linebacker London Fletcher (John Carroll; 1997) and Miami Dolphins linebacker Justin Trusnik (Ohio Northern; 2007).
Lehrkamp and Hill will be among 50 D-III players representing the United States on Team Stars and Stripes. They will face the CONADEIP All-Stars in Guadalajara, Mexico.
“This certainly means a lot and is a huge honor,” says Hill, who led the team in rushing this season and was tabbed a Second Team All-Iowa Conference offensive performer. “I just feel blessed that I get to partake in at least one more game, especially one of this magnitude. I’m looking forward to leaving the country and meeting the new players and coaches.”
Team Stars and Stripes, which will be coached by current Central College defensive coordinator Don De Waard, is scheduled to arrive in Guadalajara Dec. 9 and will hold a pair of practices each day for the first three days before taking time to tour the region. The players will stay on the Tec de Monterrey campus.
“It's a great honor to be able to play in a game like this,” says Lehrkamp, who was also a Second Team All-Iowa Conference offensive selection. “I never thought in my college career that I would ever get an opportunity to play in an all-star game. The success that has gotten me to this point has been really helpful thanks to my coaches and especially all the teammates that I have played with the past four years.”
“A very well-deserved honor for each of those two guys,” says BVU head coach Jay Anderson. “It’ll be a great opportunity for each of them to showcase their talents with some of the best players from across the country.”
Hill finished his career with 2,124 rushing yards and 17 TD’s, while Lehrkamp wrapped up his with 116 catches, 1,618 yards and 10 TD’s.
The Mexican all-star team won last year’s game, 45-27, in a game played at El Tempo del Dolor (Temple of Pain) in Puebla.
