The Buena Vista men’s tennis team has now won five straight matches and is currently in second place in the Iowa Conference standings after adding two more wins to its overall total on Saturday, including a 6-3 triumph over Wartburg College. It then closed the day with a thrilling 5-4 non-conference victory over visiting Doane College.
The Beavers started strong against the Knights (6-5) by taking two of the three doubles matches to build the early 2-1 advantage. The doubles match that they lost was a narrow 9-8 decision.
Adam Gustad (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South)picked up a thrilling three-set decision in the number one singles slot to highlight those matches. He went on to win the opening set 7-5 before falling 6-4 in the second. He picked up his fifth singles win of the year by cruising to the 10-4 win the decisive set.
Cole Renken (Cherokee, Iowa/Washington), Jason Ehrhardt (Osceola, Iowa/Clarke Community) and Christian Price (Aplington, Iowa/Aplington-Parkersburg) each followed with triumphs in the number three, four and five slots, respectively to help push the team to 3-1 in league matches this season. The win is also the first over the Knights since 2001.
BVU again took two out of three doubles matches against Doane, including one by injury default at number two doubles where the Beavers were already leading 4-3.
Doane took the first two singles matches before the Beavers closed with triumphs in three of the final four slots.
Price has now won five singles matches in a row with Renken right behind with four straight.
Buena Vista is now 7-2 overall (3-1 IIAC) and has a little break before returning to action on April 6 with a non-conference home match against Augustana College (S.D.) at 1:00pm before returning to IIAC play with a home match against Central College on April 13 at 1:00pm.
The seven victories this season is the program’s highest total since 2001. It hasn’t won eight in a single season since posting 11 back in 1997.
