Baseball Upends #11 Webster; Rally Falls Short against Wash U

Mar. 4, 2013

Sauget, Ill./St. Louis, Mo.

The Buena Vista baseball team began its day with a big 7-5 upset victory at #11 Webster University inside of GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill., before boarding the bus back to St. Louis, Mo., where its ninth-inning rally fell a little short against Washington University, as it was edged 7-4.

Against the Gorlocks, BVU got an RBI single from junior Joe Paletta (Omaha, Neb./Millard South) for the game’s first run before junior Jeremy Lambert (Alta, Iowa/Alta) came across on a wild pitch.

Webster, however, quickly responded with three runs in the bottom half to take its first lead of the day at 3-2.

The Gorlocks then added a run in the fifth before BVU fought back in the seventh with five runs on five hits.  Paletta, who finished 2-for-4, singled down the left field line to start the inning and scored two batters later on a triple from Dillon Plath (Omaha, Neb./Burke).  Jake Daniels (Saint Charles, Iowa/I-35) then doubled to drive in Plath before senior Ryan Scheetz (Omaha, Neb./Millard North) walked to force in the tying run.  Lambert then drove in the eventual game-winning runs with his two-run single one batter later.

Webster threatened in the ninth, getting a run across before sophomore Jake Bjorkgren (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) came on in relief, and after allowing a base hit up the middle, got the final two hitters to strike out to end the game and leave the bases loaded.

Each team finished with nine hits in the game.  BVU also had four stolen bases in the contest, including two from junior Weston Foxx.

Junior Andrew Marshall (Sheldon, Iowa/Sheldon) got the start on the hill for the Beavers and worked the first 3.2 innings, allowing three unearned runs on three hits.  Sophomore Scott Harris (Grimes, Iowa/Dallas Center-Grimes) came on in relief and worked the next 4.2 innings to chalk up his first career victory.  He allowed two runs on four hits, while striking out three and walking only one.  Lucas Hadaway (Sheldahl, Iowa/North Polk) surrendered a hit and a walk in the ninth before Bjorkgren got the final two outs for his second save in as many games.

Then in a game against the Beavers which featured 27 base hits, it was Washington University score three times in the third and twice more in the fourth which helped them to the three-run victory.

BVU got a run in the top-half of the third to make it a 2-1 game before Wash U got four straight hits to begin its half, including a two-run triple and a run-scoring single.  The Bears then took advantage of an error to start the fourth which led to an additional two runs.

Freshman Brandon Wessels (Palmer, Iowa/Manson Northwest Webster) singled in the sixth to drive home a run to make it a 7-2 contest.  BVU then had the bases loaded in the seventh, but a double-play ground out ended the threat.

The Beavers threatened again in the ninth, getting RBI singles from both Paletta and senior Neil Eddie (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna) to get within three and bring the tying run to the plate.  Following a pitching change, the Bears got a ground out to end the contest.

The first six hitters in the line-up went a combined 15-for-26 in the game, including a team-high four hits from Plath.  Foxx and Paletta each added three more hits with Foxx also scoring three times.

Senior Reggie Kock (Breda, Iowa/Ar-We-Va) made his first start of the year on the mound and was charged with five runs on eight hits in 2.1 innings of work.  Sophomore Cam Beatty (Omaha, Neb./Millard North) surrendered a pair of unearned runs in his inning of work, while Brennan Holm (Fairmont, Minn./South Central) and Hadaway struck out four and allowed just two hits over the final 4.2 innings.

Buena Vista is now 2-1 on the year and will be off until March 16-17 when it travels to Lincoln, Neb., for a three-game weekend series at Nebraska Wesleyan University.
