Junior Sam Engleman (Hawarden, Iowa/West Sioux) blasted a three-run home run during a four-run third inning that saw the Buena Vista softball team build a 5-0 lead against Merrimack on Monday afternoon, but the Warriors put up an eight-spot in the bottom half of the frame and went on to hang on for a 9-7 victory over the Beavers.
BVU took a 1-0 lead in the second when sophomore Jessica Stocker (Carlisle, Iowa/Carlisle), who doubled to lead off the inning, came around to score two batters later on a throwing error by the Warrior shortstop.
The early offensive production didn’t stop there, as senior Jessy Bibler (Alta, Iowa/Alta) walked to start the third and moved to second one batter later when junior Brooke Berkey (Colfax, Iowa/Colfax-Mingo) reached on an infield hit. After a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Jordon Pilcher (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) advanced both ahead one base, sophomore Stephanie Hayden (Prairie City, Iowa/PCM) came through with an RBI single to right.
Engleman, who chalked up her first triple of the year in last night’s win over UW-River Falls, kept the power streak going by blasting her seventh career round-tripper to make it a 5-0 score.
The Warriors, however, stormed right back in the bottom half, scoring eight times on seven hits, to build an 8-5 advantage.
BVU used the long ball yet again to claw back to within 8-7 in the fifth. After Engleman walked to lead-off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice from Stocker, junior Hannah Baker (Bondurant, Iowa/Bondurant-Farrar) belted a two-run home run to left. BVU later had the tying run to second with only one out, but the Warriors worked out of the jam with a strikeout and fly out.
Merrimack tallied on an insurance run in the sixth for the game’s final score.
Engleman finished 1-for-3 at the plate with the three RBI and two run scored. Stocker doubled for BVU’s other extra-base hit in the contest, as Hayden stole two of the team’s four bases.
Freshman Faith Schmidt (Emmetsburg, Iowa/Emmetsburg) suffered the loss on the mound, pitching the first 2.1 innings and being charged with six runs (four earned) on seven hits. Junior Britney Kubik (Martensdale, Iowa/Martensdale St. Mary’s) allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits over the final 3.2 innings, while striking out three.
The Beavers bounced back later in the afternoon with a thrilling 1-0 triumph over Carthage College. Stats of that contest are not currently available.
Buena Vista is now 5-4 on the year and will return to action on Tuesday with two more games. The team begins the day with a 9:00am ET contest against UW-Whitewater.
