Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Senior Brooke Wehle (Denison, Iowa/Denison-Schleswig) turned in a team-high 15 points with junior Susan Kies (Fonda, Iowa/Newell-Fonda) and Malarie Gilley (Grand Junction, Iowa/East Greene) right behind with 14 and 10, respectively, but it was a late three-pointer by the Kohawks that forced overtime, and they held off BVU at the free-throw line in the extra period to top the Beavers, 68-66.
Sophomore Becca Pennington (Mt. Ayr, Iowa/Mt. Ayr) sank a pair of free-throws with 26 seconds left to give the Beavers a 60-57 lead. Coe was holding for a final shot and nailed a three-pointer in front of their own bench with four seconds left to tie things up at 60-60. BVU’s last-second desperation shot was off target, sending the game into overtime.
The two teams were all-square at 62-62 with 2:59 left in the extra period before the Kohawks took the lead for good on a jumper with 37 seconds left. After a missed jumper from the Beavers, Coe then hit free-throws to extend the margin to four, and BVU was unable to get any closer than two.
The Beavers came out strong to start the second half, building an 11-point lead at 46-35 with nearly nine minutes gone by. Coe, however, came back with three straight three-point buckets to help claw their way back and the game was back-and-forth until the end.
Coe led by as many as seven in the first half before taking a 30-28 lead into the half.
Wehle, Kies and Gilley combined to shoot 17-of-26 from the field, combining for more than half the field goals for BVU, which shot 42 percent for the game. Pennington, along with seniors Tara Lehner (Le Mars, Iowa/Le Mars) and Heather Hansman (Westside, Iowa/Ar-We-Va), finished with eight points with Hansman also hauling in a career-high 10 rebounds.
Pennington also dished out a career-high six assists with Wehle adding five.
Kayla Waskow and Mary Halvorson turned in 12 points apiece to lead three Kohawks in double-figures.
Buena Vista is now 7-11 overall, 0-7 IIAC and will begin the second half of the league schedule on Saturday evening with a 5:00pm home contest against Central College. It will also be Community Appreciation Night inside of Siebens Fieldhouse.
