The Buena Vista softball team has been picked to finish second in this year’s Iowa Conference Preseason Coaches Poll which was released on Monday. The Beavers finished with 26 points, just four behind Loras College which was fifth.
BVU is coming off a 17-17 (7-9 IIAC) season a year ago in which it also made an appearance back in the IIAC Tournament. The Beavers look to build off that success with a young, experience group that returns in 2013. Six starters and nine letterwinners are set to take the diamond for head coach Heather Hupke.
“We’re looking forward to building off last spring’s success,” Hupke states. “[We are] continually striving for consistency.”
The Beavers finished four points in front of the University of Dubuque and 12 ahead of Wartburg College.
Luther College, last season’s IIAC champion, is the coaches favorite to repeat, earning all seven possible first-place votes (coaches can’t vote for their own team) and tallying 56 points. Central College landed the final first-place vote and was close behind with 50 points. Coe College and Simpson College were next at 42 and 40 points, respectively.
Buena Vista gets its season underway on Friday when it heads up north to the Rosemount Dome in Minnesota for six games in three days. First up is a doubleheader against #20 St. Thomas (Minn.) beginning at 9:30am.
