The Buena Vista baseball team bounced back nicely on Wednesday afternoon, sweeping a pair of non-conference games from Gustavus Adolphus by scores of 6-2 and 10-1.
The Gusties took their only lead of the day with a run in the first inning of game one. They pushed across a run on an infield single with one out, and BVU got out of further damage after turning a 4-6-3 double play to get out of a bases loaded jam.
The advantage was short-lived as an RBI single from senior Ryan Scheetz (Omaha, Neb./Millard North) in the bottom half got the run back for BVU.
Junior Weston Foxx (Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn) gave the Beavers the lead in the third when he blasted the team’s first home run of the year, a solo shot to right, with the wind blowing out.
The Beavers took advantage of a pair of defensive miscues in the fourth to extend the lead to 4-1. Gustavus pulled within 4-2 in the fifth, but junior Jeremy Lambert (Alta, Iowa/Alta) quickly got that run back with his opposite field solo home run in the bottom half.
Scheetz then knocked home his second run of the contest in the sixth on a fielder’s choice.
The Gusties did out-hit the Beavers, 7-4, in the contest, but left 10 runners on base.
Senior Reggie Kock (Breda, Iowa/Ar-We-Va) improves to 1-1 on the year with the win. He pitched five innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits, despite walking four and striking out one.
BVU jumped on the board with five quick runs in the first inning of the nightcap and never looked back. Scheetz picked up another RBI on a safety squeeze to put the team on the board, and the Beavers later got RBI singles from Jesse Munsterman (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) and Dillon Plath (Omaha, Neb./Burke), as well as a run-scoring double from Lambert.
Gustavus got its lone run in the third before BVU added two more runs in the fifth on Lambert’s two-run blast before adding three more in the sixth.
Lambert went 4-for-4 in the contest with three extra-base hits, drove in four and scored twice. Freshman Brandon Wessels (Palmer, Iowa/Manson NW Webster) added three more hits and scored twice, while Munsterman and Foxx chipped in with two base hits. Munsterman also drove in the one run and scored twice.
The Beavers pounded out 16 hits in the contest, compared to only six for the Gusties.
Freshman Adam Bernstorf (Altoona, Iowa/Southeast Polk) made his collegiate debut and picked up the win for BVU, going five innings, allowing just the one run on four hits, while striking out four and walking one. Cam Beatty (Omaha, Neb./Millard North) and Kendall Hazel (Sergeant Bluff, Iowa/Sergeant Bluff) came on and each worked a scoreless inning in relief, with Beatty striking out two.
Buena Vista improves to 9-7 on the year and will continue its stretch of home games with a four-game series against Wartburg College this Friday and Saturday, April 5-6. First pitch of game one on Friday is scheduled for 1:00pm.
