Junior Weston Foxx (Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn) turned in three hits and two RBI, including the go-ahead RBI single in the 10th, on Saturday afternoon against Pomona-Pitzer, to help lift the Beavers to a thrilling 4-3 (10 inn.) triumph to start their spring break trip.
Senior Neil Eddie (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna) singled to lead-off the 10th inning for BVU before being lifted for pinch runner Ryan Titman (Boone, Iowa/Boone). Freshman Brandon Wessels (Palmer, Iowa/Manson NW Webster) then put down a sacrifice bunt to move Titman to second. After Dillon Plath (Omaha, Neb./Burke) walked to put runners at first and second, Pomona-Pitzer then got a strikeout for the second out before a double-steal moved each runner up one base. Foxx then followed with his third hit of the contest to score Titman.
Sophomore Jake Bjorkgren (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale), who came on in relief to pitch the final three innings, worked around a two-out single in the bottom half of the inning to record a strikeout for the game’s final out.
BVU held a 3-1 advantage before P-P rallied to tie things up with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Beaver got on the board first with a two-out RBI single from senior Ryan Scheetz (Omaha, Neb./Millard North), who drove in junior Joe Paletta (Omaha, Neb./Millard South), who had singled with two outs and moved up to second on a passed ball.
The Sagehens tallied a run in the fourth to even things at 1-1 before BVU scored single runs in the seventh and the eighth to build a two-run advantage. Foxx stole third in the seventh and scored on an error by the catcher. He then chalked up an infield RBI single to make it 3-1 in the eighth.
Paletta and Scheetz each followed with two hits, as the Beavers out-hit P-P, 12-7.
Junior Jon Ringblom (Omaha, Neb./Millard North) turned in another stellar outing on the mound, going seven innings, allowing just one unearned run on three hits, while striking out four and walking only one. Bjorkgren got the win in relief, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and striking out one.
Pomona-Pitzer came into the game ranked just outside of the top-25 in this week’s D3baseball.com poll and is now 16-6 on the year. BVU improves to 4-2 overall and will face Carthage College at 1:00pm on Sunday.
