Junior Brooke Berkey went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, as Jordon Pilcher and Stephanie Hayden each drove in one, and the Buena Vista softball team secured its first win of the year with a thrilling 5-4 victory in game one of a doubleheader with Bethel University on Saturday morning inside of the Rosemount Dome.
BVU jumped out early on, getting a pair of runs in the first and three more in the second to take a 5-1 lead. Berkey led off the bottom of the first by getting hit by a pitch. She then stole second and scored one batter later when Pilcher singled. Pilcher, who took second on the throw, then moved up to third on a passed ball before scoring on an RBI bunt single by Stephanie Hayden.
The Royals cut the lead in half in the second with a home run to lead off the frame, but BVU came right back in the bottom half, getting three unearned runs when sophomore Jessica Stocker reached on an error.
After a lead-off walk by Bethel to lead off the fifth, the Royals then got a two-run home run a batter later to get within a pair at 5-3. Jenna Falline, who had worked the first four innings, came back in on relief and got back-to-back strikeouts and a pop out to end the frame.
Bethel threatened with one out in the seventh and mounted one run, but had the tying run on base with only one out before Falline got the final hitters to line out and fly out, respectively.
Falline picks up her first career win for the Beavers, going seven innings and allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out six and walking four. Brittney Kubik faced three batters in relief and allowed two runs, while walking two.
The bats went cold for the Beavers in the finale, as the Royals out-hit BVU, 12-3 in the contest, en route to a 6-1 triumph.
Pilcher doubled for just the second extra-base hit for BVU in four games, with Stocker and Sam Knudsen adding the final two hits.
Faith Schmidt took the loss on the mound for BVU, going the distance and allowing all six runs on 12 hits, while striking out five and walking four.
The Royals broke the game open in the third with three runs before adding single runs in both the fifth and six innings.
Buena Vista is now 1-3 overall and will wrap up its season-opening road trip with a doubleheader on Sunday against Gustavus Adolphus beginning at 8:30am.
