The Buena Vista baseball team began its four-game series against Simpson with a pair of thrilling wins, but the Storm came back on Sunday afternoon to salvage the split by edging the Beavers 4-3 before closing the series with a 13-6 triumph.
After seeing Simpson chalk up three runs in the first inning of game one, BVU chipped away at that lead by getting a run in the third when Nick Schlecht scored from third on a wild pitch. The Beavers then loaded the bases with no one out in the fourth and plated a run on a double play ground out before getting a two-out RBI single to left from senior Alex Davis, tying the game at 3-3.
Simpson squeaked across the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run in the fifth on an RBI single with one out.
BVU tried to rally in the seventh, getting runners to first and second with two outs with the middle of the order coming up, but Simpson was able to get a pop up in foul territory to end the game.
Davis turned in two of the team’s seven hits in the contest with Jesse Munsterman adding a hit and a run scored. Brandon Wessels picked up his team-leading ninth double of the year as well.
Scott Harris suffered the loss and dips to 1-2 on the year. He was charged with all four runs in 4.1 innings of work, while walking five and striking out three. Lucas Hadaway came on in relief, and allowed just two hits and a walk, while striking out three over the final 2.2 innings.
After Simpson again jumped out of the gates early with two runs in the first inning of game two, BVU got a big two-out, two-run single from Ryan Scheetz in the third to make it a 2-2 contest.
The Storm quickly answered, putting up an eight-spot in the fourth to take control and build a 10-2 advantage.
BVU had an answer of its own, getting four of those runs back to get within 10-6, but Simpson added two more runs in the fifth and one more in the ninth for the seven-run victory.
Weston Foxx drew a bases loaded walk for the first run in the fourth for the Beavers, while Paletta came through with a big two-out, bases clearing double.
Alex Brown also came on to pinch hit and turned in his first double of the year.
Wessels turned in a team-high three hits and scored twice with Paletta finishing 2-for-3.
Adam Bernstorf suffered his first loss of the year (2-1) after being tagged with eight runs and six hits over 3.1 innings of work.
Buena Vista is now 14-14 overall (6-10 IIAC) and will return to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon when the team is set to make-up its doubleheader at Coe College.
