Buena Vista University director of athletics, Christyn Abaray, has announced the hiring of Rick Halverson as the university’s next head men’s and women’s tennis coach beginning in the fall of 2013.
Halverson will join the Beaver staff after having served as the head women’s tennis coach at Olivet College (Mich.) for the 2012-13 academic year. Prior to his time there, he was assistant men’s and women’s tennis coach at his alma mater of Michigan Technological University for five years where he was in charge of several duties ranging from coaching and recruiting to strength and conditioning sessions, scouting and budgeting. In June of 2011, he became the assistant general manager/tennis professional at the Michigan Tech Gates Tennis Center.
“I am excited to have Rick joining our BVU Athletics staff as the Head Men’s and Women’s Tennis Coach,” says Abaray. “His philosophy, his knowledge, and his energy are a great fit for us, and I believe it will drive us as we move further in the right direction with our tennis programs. We are looking forward to his arrival later this summer.”
Halverson earned his bachelors of science degree in biology from Michigan Tech in 2010. During his time there, he was also a member of the Huskies tennis team where he earned honorable mention all-conference accolades in 2007 and served as a team captain his senior year.
“I am looking forward to continuing the tradition Coach McCadams has created over his tenure and doing my part to take both programs to the next level,” adds Halverson. “It is definitely a luxury to inherit a couple of teams coming off recent success. The key will be taking that next step. One of our goals will be to constantly challenge those schools right above us in the conference. Looking at last year's results and the amount of players returning, I feel we have a lot of potential and I am very excited to lead both programs going forward.”
Halverson will officially begin his duties with BVU on August 1, 2013.
