Resident Advisor Position Description
Minimum Qualifications
- Maintain a cumulative and semester grade point average of 2.5.
- Maintain full-time student status each semester (12 credits).
- Live in a residence hall at BVU for at least one full semester.
- Commitment to being a Resident Advisor for a full year appointment.
- Good academic and judicial standing with BVU.
Responsibilities
Staff Training
- Resident Advisors are to attend a weekly One on One meeting with RHD.
- Resident Advisors are to attend a weekly hall staff meeting.
- Resident Advisors are to attend a monthly in-service.
- Resident Advisors are to attend assigned committee meetings.
- Resident Advisors are to attend Fall Training beginning in early August.
- Resident Advisors are to attend Spring Training beginning at the end of January.
- Resident Advisors are to attend regularly scheduled educational all campus staff meetings.
Work With Students
- Build Relationships with and be available to all students on the floor and throughout the building.
- Be available to assist students with personal, health, academic or other problems. Refer these students to the appropriate campus and area resources, if necessary.
- Understand and clearly interpret institutional policies and procedures.
- Consistently confront and report suspected violations on an Incident Report Form to the Residence Hall Director.
- Mediate roommate and/or personal conflicts when requested.
- Plan, develop, and implement community building activities in compliance with the Programming Model established by the professional staff.
- Maintain a standard of personal conduct commensurate with responsibilities. The RA is expected to set an example in both knowing and abiding by institutional policies.
- Keep Residence Hall Directors informed of problems, attitudes, interests, activities, and needs of the residents in your hall.
Hall Operations and Administration
- Assist with each opening and closing of the hall throughout the year. Following a vacation period, the RA will arrive prior to the hall opening and will remain in the hall until the hall is closed and all administrative tasks are completed.
- Is "on duty" on a regular basis as assigned by the Residence Hall Director. When on duty the RA will remain in the complex from 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. Monday thru Friday, 24 hours on weekends.
- Complete all Programming requirements.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
Time Off
Each staff member is allowed 10 nights off per semester and 3 nights off during interim. A "night off" is defined as any night that the RA is out of their building past 2:00 am. Nights off campus must be approved with the Residence Hall Director. RAs should not spend any nights away from campus without permission of the Residence Hall Director.
Additional Employment
It is expected that enough time is committed to the position in order to fulfill the responsibilities of the position. On campus, employment up to 10 hours per week is permitted. On campus employment in excess of 10 hours per week and all off-campus employment must be approved by the Residence Hall Director.
Roommates
Resident Advisors will not have a bedroom roommate, unless required as a result of a housing overflow situation. Because the RA room is a place where residents must be welcomed, having a roommate inconveniences the roommate and residents, thus RAs will have their own room
Compensation
- Compensation for first year Resident Assistants is free room, one half board plan and free cable. The appropriate dollar amount will be credited to your bill at the beginning of each semester.
- RAs are expected to be on duty during times in which the buildings are closed. These RAs will be provided a stipend for meals during these breaks.
Interim - RAs seeking permission to study off campus during interim must receive permission from the Director of Residence Life. Permission will not be automatically granted. RAs that are not living on campus, enrolled in a course, and working during interim will be billed for housing charges. Receiving permission will be billed for interim housing charges
Contract
- Signing the Resident Advisor Contract verifies that you will perform the duties and services described above.
- RAs are expected to abide by the expectations set forth by the Residence Hall Director of the building in which they are assigned as well as the expectations of the Director of Residence Life.
- The Office of Residence Life reserves the right to dismiss any RA and terminate his/her contract should it be determined that these responsibilities are not being fulfilled. RAs that are dismissed or resign will not typically be allowed to live in the same residence hall where they were an RA.
