First-Year Seminar

The transition from high school to college, while exciting, can be equally intimidating. Your environment has changed. Your study habits are different, poised to become more intense. You may begin balancing your academic schedule with outside clubs, organizations, a job, or all three. In exchange you acquire independence. However, with this newfound freedom comes greater responsibility. As many seniors can testify, it’s easy to get caught up in your newly-acquired liberty, especially now that your parents’ “My house, my rules” edict has been rendered void. You may be on your own for likely the first time, but that doesn’t mean you’re going at this alone. First Year Seminar alleviates your stress and help you get started on the right foot.

A small-section course, First Year Seminar ignites your BVU experience by focusing on a unique topic, chosen by you, from a wide array of options. While the course is required, many upperclassmen are glad it’s designed that way. This is where you have a chance to really sink your teeth in and get to know your professor and classmates in a comfortable and relaxed environment. Expect to emerge with not only a firmer grasp on skill areas such as writing, reading, speaking, listening, etc., but also with confidence to take on the rest of your collegiate career.
