Congratulations to BVU Psychology Alumnus Jalaal Madyun (class of 2011) and Dr. Wind Goodfriend, Associate Professor of Psychology, who have been published in the peer-reviewed journal "Modern Psychological Studies." Their paper, titled, "Death, Extraversion, Commitment, and Sex: A Study on Terror Management," investigates how thoughts of one's own mortality affects decisions about risky sexual behaviors. The paper is the result of Jalaal's project from Dr. Goodfriend's year-long Research Thesis class. For a copy of the paper, email Dr. Goodfriend.

Mason City GPS Instructor Selected as Presenter

Congratulations to Psychology alumni Renee Fagen and Desmond Owusu (both class of 2009), who are co-authors on a paper just published in the peer-reviewed “Journal of Anxiety Disorders.” The paper, supervised by first author Dr. Stephen Whiteside, is the product of the internship Renee and Desmond completed during the January of their senior year, when they worked for Dr. Whiteside at the Mayo Clinic. This internship is offered every year through a partnership between BVU and the Mayo Clinic. Their paper is titled, “Validation of the Spence Children’s Anxiety Scale’s obsessive compulsive subscale in a clinical and community sample.” For a copy of the paper, contact Dr. Wind Goodfriend. Psychology Student Lands Internship at Mayo Clinic

Congratulations to Psychology major Megan Vogt, who will be completing a prestigious internship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN this January. Megan will be working with Dr. Stephen Whiteside, a child clinical psychologist, on treatment programs for children who have obsessive-compulsive disorder and other anxiety disorders. The Mayo Clinic has partnered with Buena Vista University to provide psychology internships over January for the past four years.

Dr. Wind Goodfriend, Associate Professor of Psychology, has been invited to become a regular blogger for the "Psychology Today" website, which receives over a million visitors each month. Her website, titled "Psychology in Movies," highlights a different movie each month, and how the movie portrays theories or concepts from the world of psychology. Her first entry discusses how the "Twilight" movies and books model abusive, violent, and unhealthy dating relationships. URMED Interns selected

Congratulations to Cammy Matters, Whitney Nelson, Sabrina Martinez and Alex Davis for being selected as the 2012 Undergraduate Rural Medicine Education and Development (URMED) Interns. Each individual will spend three weeks in a hospital setting as they interact with various healthcare providers. Sabrina will be located in Spirit Lake, the most recent member of the URMED network. Cammy, Whitney and Alex will each have two weeks at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center and a week at one of the following hospitals in Humboldt, Sac City or Pocahontas. Each individual will receive a $3000 stipend to assist in their application and visits to medical schools. Now in its fourth year, URMED seeks to recruit BVU students to medical careers in a rural setting.

Congratulations to BVU alumnus Ian LaForge (class of 2010) and Dr. Wind Goodfriend, Associate Professor of Psychology. Their co-authored article, "Developing a New Device for Measuring Preferred Body Shapes," has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Psychological Inquiry. This paper was Ian's thesis project in Dr. Goodfriend's year-long Research Thesis class. The paper describes the invention of a computer-based software program in which research participants can choose body shapes they find physically attractive. Professor’s Translation to be Produced

A revival of German playwright Georg Buchner’s working-class drama, Woyzeck, is being produced by Raconteur Theatre Company in Columbus, OH. Communication professor Dr. Bryan Kampbell completed the translation and adaptation together with Dr. Derek Davidson. The theatre company’s website describes the play as “a drama exploring the tenuous stability of the human psyche.”
Communications Assistant Intern with the City of Storm Lake

Congratulations to Grace Bodey who will be the next Communications Assistant Intern with the City of Storm Lake. She will work with them in January and again beginning in April, for a one-year term. The position duties include providing assistance to the City Clerk to ensure efficient and accurate internal and external communications are provided to employees, elected officials, and citizens. National Recognition for Gerontology-Infused Course

Kathryn McKinley, social work program director and assistant professor of social work was honored by Council on Social Work Education's Gero-Ed Center for developing her Research I & II courses to include selected gerontology social work competencies and content involving older adults. These syllabi were developed as part of her involvement in the three year Curriculum Development Institute Program. These syllabi are posted on CSWE's Gero-Ed Teaching Tools Website for others to use in their teaching.

Congratulations to Dr. Wind Goodfriend, Associate Professor of Psychology, who will be presenting research at the Interpersonal Communication & Social Interaction International Conference in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Her paper, titled, "At First Sight: Superficial Stereotypes about Children," discusses stereotypes assigned to children based on their clothing, and how these stereotypes affect their treatment at daycare facilities. This paper was published last year in the "Journal of Psychological Inquiry," and included co-author Crystal Davis (BVU class of 2008). Congratulations to Associate Professor of Psychology Wind Goodfriend and BVU alumna Arielle Butler (class of 2011). They have written an empirical article together which has just been accepted for publication in the journal "Modern Psychological Studies." The paper is based on Arielle's year-long research project in Dr. Goodfriend's "Research Thesis" class. The title of the paper is "Long distance vs. proximal romantic relationships: Predicting alternatives, satisfaction, and bias." Arielle is about to begin her graduate work at Argosy University in Chicago. - Psychology Dept.

Congratulations to Andrea Wilson who had her poster session accepted for presentation at the 2011 Iowa Council for Exceptional Children State Conference. Andrea will present her session on Thursday, September 22 in Des Moines, Iowa. Andrea's project "Activity Schedules: Promoting Independence for Students with Disabilities in Every Classroom" was the result of her academic research which was presented at the 2011 BVU Scholars' Day. This juried acceptance reflects the high quality of work done by Andrea and shows the work presented at Scholars' Day can often be taken to higher levels. BVU's Communication Studies faculty were well represented at last week's Iowa Communication Association Conference held in Ankeny. Two faculty presented work on a program entitled "Internationalizing our Campuses and Professional Lives." Dr. Mary Gill's presentation was entitled "International and Domestic Students: Creating a Healthy Environment" and Dr. Jill Rhea's presentation was entitled "We all Need Diversity: Intercultural Relationships Matter." Dr. Beth Lamoureux presented a teaching strategy as part of a G.I.F.T.S (Great Ideas for Teaching Speech) Panel entitled "Global Inventory: Creating Relevance for Students Living in A Global Economy." Dr. Bryan Kampbell was elected as an At-Large member to the Executive Board of the association and Dr. Gill assumed the role of editor for the Iowa Journal of Communication.

Sandra Smith, a BVU graduate with majors in theatre and biology, will graduate from UCLA this spring with a Master of Fine Arts degree in acting. Sandra recently appeared in the MFA graduate showcase of scenes and monologues and has been approached by a number of agencies and management companies interested in representing her. At this point Sandra has signed with CESD, a talent agency that offers performers complete representation for on-camera and voice-over commercials, print/fashion/runway, beauty, dance, hosting, animation and gaming, hosting, puppeteers, promos/trailers/narration, and radio imaging & TV affiliates marketing. Artwork Exhibited and Published

An oil painting, "Barbie As a Muse", by Mary Mello-Nee will be displayed in the main gallery of the Sioux City Art Center beginning this Thursday, May 5. Her piece will be a part of an exhibition that includes artworks by local and regional artists featured in the 2011 edition of The Briar Cliff Review, Briar Cliff University's award-winning journal. This annual publication focuses on poetry, fiction, non-fiction and art. The opening of this exhibition on May 5th, coincides with the release of the 2011 edition, Volume 23 of The Briar Cliff Review and includes readings by some of the poets and authors along with comments from the artists. Mello-Nee's painting will remain on display at the Sioux City Art Center through July 3rd. The Briar Cliff Review publication can be purchased at the Art Center or online.

Student Earns Placement in Japan

BVU Instructional Designer, John McGaha, was recently published in the book "Ethical Issues and Security Monitoring Trends in Global Healthcare: Technological Advancements" through IGI Global. BVU Students Complete Honors Program

Congratulations to Cassandra Pauley, Grant Turner, Emily Nielsen, and Joe Peterson on their completion of the honors program.
Cassandra Pauley partnered with the University of Nebraska Medical Center's Eppley Cancer Institute to investigate a possible link between breast cancer and lung cancer. Her honors capstone project, "The Role of the Signal Transducers and Activators of Transcription (Stat) Protein, Specifically Stat5, on Human Breast Cancer and Other Disease," was approved by the honors committee.
Grant Turner tested whether a chemical in lemon oil and lime oil might be used to prevent cancer cell formation. His honors project, "Examination of the anti-carcinogenic effects of lime oil and lemon oil," was approved by the honors committee.
Emily Nielsen partnered with researchers at the Mayo Clinic to study how we might use viruses to kill cancer cells. Her honors project, "Downregulation of the human sodium-iodide symporter using short hairpin RNA," was approved by the honors committee.
Joe Peterson partnered with researchers at the University of Iowa to study the role that riboflavin plays in the growth of bacteria, which could help us better understand how bacterial infections develop in the human body. His honors project, "Chemosensory Regulation of Riboflavin in Biofilm Formation, was approved by the honors committee.
Please congratulate these hard working students on their achievement. The honors program encourages BVU's best and brightest students to develop their academic talents beyond the regular curriculum through specialized courses and an extensive research project. Honors students must maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher, and completion of the program demonstrates mastery of critical thinking skills and the development of a sophisticated intellectual disposition.

Dr. Ehler awarded National Science Foundation Summer Grant for research with BVU students

Congratulations to Dr. Timothy Ehler, Associate Professor of Chemistry. His proposal entitled "Study of Organosulfur Self-Assembled Monolayers on Gallium Arsenide using Sum-Frequency Generation" was funded by the National Science Foundation / Northern Plains Undergraduate Research Center. The grant will provide funding for Dr. Ehler and two students, including the cost of research supplies, travel and student stipends for the summer of 2011. Dr. Ehler's research will involve a research collaboration with Dr. Thomas Furtak, Physics Dept. Chair, at the Colorado School of Mines.

The title of the article is "An Empirical Examination of Customer Relationships in Chinese Commercial Banks."

Dr. Michael Whitlatch has just been notified that two book reviews have been published in Choice. In the February issue, his review of "The Art of Greek Theatre," was published. This is a internet resource that was used by the Getty Museum for an exhibit on Greek Theatre. Students in the fall Theatre History I class test drove the site in terms of its usefulness for college students. In April, Choice will publish his review of "Representing the Past: Essays in Performance Historiography," by Charlotte M. Canning, and Thomas Postlewait.

Global Fellows for 2012 Selected

Please join me in congratulating our first six Global Fellows: Makensie Brown, Kayla Hartmann, Laura Page, Tesia Posekany, Stephanie Puhrmann, and Jennifer Welch. The applications from all the candidates were strong, making the selection process difficult. The highlight of the Global Fellows program will be the January Interim 2012 trip to Cape Horn, Chile. Dr. Melinda Coogan will be leading the trip, which will be coordinated with the Sub-Antarctic Biological Conservation Program coordinated by the University of North Texas, the Universidad de Magallanes, and the Chilean Institute of Ecology and Biodiversity. The purpose of the trip is to learn more about the research, education, and conservation activities of the Cape Horn Biosphere Reserve. The Global Fellows will also learn about the University of North Texas' Omora Park program and the ways it integrates ecological science and environmental ethics for bio-cultural conservation in an interdisciplinary manner. The Global Fellows will also be participating in the International Symposium on Society and Natural Resources (ISSRM). The ISSRM will be held on the University of Wisconsin campus in Madison from June 4-8. Another of the responsibilities of the Global Fellows program is to serve as campus advocates for international travel, globalism, and sustainability. Professor Presents to International Education Leaders

Robbie Ludy, Professor of Special Education, presented to the educational directors of Quality Schools International (QSI) at their fall leadership meeting in Berlin, Germany. Dr. Ludy provided training for the directors of QSI's schools on their changing role in serving students with diverse learning needs. Specifically, she helped them redefine their roles as educational leaders and provided information on how they can assist staff in meeting educational needs of students. QSI consists of 30+ schools internationally which serve children of diplomatic and business families located overseas as well as local individuals.

URMED Fellowship Winners Announced

Congratulations to Michael Dirkx, Grant Turner and Rachael Reicks for being awarded Undergraduate Rural Medicine Education and Development (URMED) fellowships for interim, 2011. These three students were selected from a large pool of highly qualified applicants by a panel of BVRMC doctors and administrators and BVU faculty. Each student will receive a 3 week rural medicine internship experience where they will spend two weeks at BVRMC and one week at a medical center in either Sac City, Pocahontas or Humboldt. The fellowship comes with a $3,000 stipend to help defray the costs of applying to medical school.

All three will be spending this January working as interns at the famous Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Congratulations to student Alyssa Kluver and psychology professor Dr. Wind Goodfriend, who have co-authored a paper that was just accepted for publication in the "Journal of Psychological Inquiry." The paper is titled "Children and the Power of Optimism," and studied how asking children to think optimistically temporarily decreases their symptoms of depression and anxiety. The paper was completed as part of Dr. Goodfriend's Research Thesis course, and Alyssa has already presented the work at several conferences. Great job, Alyssa!

A research paper co-authored by Dr. Lei Wen, Associate Professor of Finance at BVU and Dr. Litao Zhong, an Assistant Professor of Economics and Finance at St. Charles Community College, Cottleville, Missouri, was accepted for publication in Journal of International Finance and Economics (JIFE). The paper is titled "Interactions of U.S. Interest Rate, Bank Loans and Foreign Exchange Rate between U.S. and Japan." JIFE is a peer-reviewed and publically available journal listed in the Cabell's Directory of Refereed Publications 2005-10 Editions as well as in the Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory since 2004. Heidi Cejka (Class of 2010) presents her scholarship, "Social Ideologies: A Case Study of the Beautiful and the Beastly Messages Sent to Our Children" as part of the Top Student Papers Panel as well. Katelyn Croker, Emily Einck, Karla Swenson (Class of 2010), Whitney Novotny (Class of 2010) and Steven Ricke will showcase their original scholarship during a separate panel. Dirkx and Reicks Complete Summer Courses and Internships

This summer BVU Juniors Michael Dirkx and Rachael Reicks successfully completed an intensive 3 week Introductory Mandarin Chinese language course and Chinese/Taiwanese culture and history course at Wenzao Ursuline College of Languages in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. After completing their courses they also took part in brief science internship experiences in the laboratories of Dr. Shu-Chun Teng at the National Taiwan University College of Medicine in Taipei and of Dr. Jin-Qiu Zhou at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shanghai. Their travel to Taiwan and China was supported in large part by the BVU Cumberland Student Development Award.

BVU Junior Michael Dirkx presented his research "Proline-mediated protection of yeast cells from hydrogen peroxide" in a seminar to other scientists at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shanghai, China on August 5, 2010. The research he presented was carried out with a BVU faculty member in the Estelle Siebens Science Center during the summer of 2009 as one of the BVU School of Science Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship winners. His travel to China was supported in part by the BVU Cumberland Student Development Award.

Congratulations to Assistant Professor Wind Goodfriend and psychology student Chase Barrick - they have written a book chapter together which was just accepted for publication. The chapter, titled "The Dark Defender," will be published in the book "The Psychology of Dexter," out this summer. The chapter discusses Freudian defense mechanisms used by characters in the Showtime TV show Dexter. This is Dr. Goodfriend's fifth chapter in the series of books on

Aaron Lockwood Takes First Place at Iowa Sociological Association Annual Meeting

Aaron Lockwood, a senior in Criminology and Criminal Justice, took first place in the academic poster competition at the Iowa Sociological Association Annual Meeting on April 24th. This poster is the result of original research conducted this spring. Aaron conducted a content analysis of the last statements of death row offenders in Texas between 2000-2010 using a framework of Terror Management Theory (TMT). The goal of this research was to expand upon a previously used coding scheme in an effort to better understand how those facing execution use specific defense mechanisms to avoid thinking about their impending death and instead leave one last impression on the world about who they are.

BV County Photo On Exhibit at Sioux City Art Center

A panorama of Buena Vista Country goes on display in the main gallery of the Sioux City Art Center beginning April 29. The 20 by 33 inch panorama, entitled "520th West of M50," will be displayed in the gallery with other art pieces published in this year's
Briar Cliff Review. The photograph is from a series on Buena Vista County by Bruce Ellingson, professor of Media Studies at Buena Vista University. Ellingson has more than a dozen of his large-scale panoramas on display in Storm Lake at the United Community Health Center and at Methodist Manor. "520th West of M50" is from his ongoing photographic series, which documents the rural areas of Buena Vista County and Storm Lake.
Ellingson has been granted a sabbatical from Buena Vista University this fall and will be touring national parks west of the Mississippi to continue his large-scale panoramic photography. His images can be seen at his flickr website:

Cassandra Pauley Awarded Eppley Cancer Research Fellowship

Knutson and Jackson Selected as Science Research Winners

Athletic Training Students to Present Research at District Convention

Samantha Narveson and Erin Williams, both junior athletic training students, have been selected to present at the Mid-America Athletic Training Association (MAATA) Spring Symposium held in Columbia, Missouri on March 27-28. The MAATA symposium brings health professionals from seven states together to learn about advances in athletic training and health education. Erin Williams has been selected to present her research on Sensory-Motor Control in Chronic Ankle Instability. Erin has completed an intraship at BVU where she presented her findings and developed a portion of the ankle exercise program in place for use with the current student-athletes. Samantha Narveson has been selected to present on two topics for this event. She is presenting research related to Blood pH Levels After Intensive Anaerobic Exercise based on an intraship she completed this fall. She is also presenting a Meta-Analysis of Range of Motion as well as the Body's Adaptation to Extended Time Spent in Functional Positions. The athletic training education program wants to extend their congratulations to both Erin and Samantha on their hard work and selection to speak at this symposium.

Ludy to Present about Sensory Integration

Robbie Ludy, Professor of Special Education, has received notice of her acceptance to present her work this summer in Riga, Latvia. Dr. Ludy presentation "Facilitating Sensory Integration in the Classroom: Practical Points for Educators" will be a part of an international conference on inclusive practices sponsored by the Division of International Special Education Services of the Council for Exceptional Children. She will travel to Latvia in July to make her presentation and will extend her time there to work with Latvian educators.
Packer Wins Raven Foundation Essay Contest

Sydney Snyder, recipient of the 2009 Raccoon River Watershed Association (RRWA) Research and Education Grant, and faculty sponsor Dr. Melinda Coogan have been invited to present the results of their summer 2009 research at the annual RRWA meeting to be held in Des Moines on March 6. Sydney, who was assisted by BVU senior biology major, Jennifer Flint, used a volunteer wetland assessment protocol developed by Coogan to train six Storm Lake AVID students and one Alta High School student on wetland data collection and analysis. Wetland assessments continued throughout the summer to include investigations of Long Pond and Snake Creek Marsh near Des Moines, with the assistance of BVU senior Joe Vandyke and three BVU alumni, Todd Wical, currently attending medical school at Des Moines University, Brook Krings, and Josh Abel, both of whom are currently attending graduate school at Western Illinois University. The final component of the summer grant included a biweekly assessment of Storm Lake’s nutrient and algal composition completed by BVU senior Kelli Turnquist. All students involved with the summer 2009 projects will be attending the RRWA conference to present research results

Evans Completes Fellowship

BVU senior Carly Evans spent her December break and January Interim engaged in her Rollins Fellowship experience. She served as an intern at Australia Walkabout Wildlife Park in Calga Australia, a park dedicated to the preservation of rare and endangered Australian animals and plants. Carly lived and worked at the park, serving in many capacities, including as a graphic designer working on several educational projects. For instance, she created all new signage for the park as well as posters and other materials to educate the public about the dangers of a proposed sand mine next to the park. Congratulations, Carly!

Marean Interns in Washington, DC

Lindsey Marean, BVU senior, is spending her spring semester interning in Washington, DC, with Accordia Global Health Foundation, a non-profit organization that works to fight infectious diseases in Africa. The foundation has a partnership with the Infectious Diseases Institute in Kampala, Uganda, to educate African students to have careers in health care. The paper, titled "Comfort food: Obesity and mood influences on food intake," will be published in the peer-reviewed journal "Modern Psychological Studies." The paper is based on the research project that Gabby completed as part of Dr. Goodfriend's Research Thesis class two years ago, and focuses on how individuals in negative moods consume more food and foods which are less healthy. Three BVU Students Awarded URMED Fellowships

The Undergraduate Rural Medicine Education and Development (URMED) program is pleased to announce that BVU students Austin Ferguson, Benjamin Lancaster and Emily Nielsen have been awarded URMED Internships for January of 2010. These students were selected to participate in an intensive three week medical internship program. Each student will spend two weeks interning at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center and one week interning at a hospital in either Pocahontas, Sac City or Humboldt. Each student will receive a $3,000 stipend that can be used to defray the costs of the medical school application process. Coogan Selected Reviewer for Canadian Risk Assessment

Dr. Melinda Coogan has been selected by Environment Canada to review the draft Screening Assessment Report for triclosan. As part of the Government of Canada's Chemicals Management Plan, a draft Screening Assessment Report was prepared for the substance triclosan, the subject of Dr. Coogan's PhD Dissertation. This report consists of an ecological risk assessment of triclosan in Canada and cites her triclosan bioaccumulation publications found in ET&C and Chemosphere.

Congratulations to Dr. Wind Goodfriend, Assistant Professor of Psychology, and Crystal Avon, BVU psychology student (class of 2008). An empirical research article they wrote together has just been accepted for publication in the "Journal of Psychological Inquiry." Crystal is the primary author on the paper, which was written for the year-long Research Thesis class Dr. Goodfriend has added to the psychology curriculum. The title of the article is "At first sight: Socioeconomic status and halo effects on judgments of children." Congratulations to mock trial team member Graham Guenther, who was named All-Region Outstanding Witness at this year's regional tournament held in Davenport, Iowa. The team competed as attorneys and witnesses in the American Mock Trial Association case Walton v. Blitz News Network.
Bahr, Guenther, and Peichel Present Papers at Political Science Conference

Three BVU students presented papers at this year's Midwest Political Science Undergraduate Research Conference. The research presentations included: "Morning in America: A Theoretical Look at the 1980 Presidential Election" by Michael Bahr; "The Economics of Food and Fuel: The Dynamic Effects of Ethanol in the U.S. Corn Market, 1978-2007" by Jeremy Peichel; and "War of Words: Inside the Attack on the U.S. Constitution During World War I and World War II" by Graham Guenther.

Donovan Day Wins History Paper Award

Students present at Iowa Academy of Sciences Meeting

On April 17-18, 2009, 22 BVU students presented their research at the Iowa Academy of Sciences meeting at Des Moines University in Des Moines, IA. BVU totaled 13 presentations by 23 students. Presentations were done by Alex Abel, Alyssa Hudnall, Jennifer Davis, Liz Ahrendsen, Andrew Demers, Jennifer Flint, Ben Lancaster, Katelyn Nehring, Aubrey Hauswirth, Megan Kruckenberg, Ally Eymann, Jessica Warneke, Jessica Weismann, Zane Gernhart, Keith Foreman, Josh Abel, Brook Krings, Joe VanDyke, Kathy Leonard, Heather Hix, Todd Wical, Chris Dirkx and Matt Nicholson. BVU's 13 presentations were the second most by any school (behind the University of Northern Iowa) and equaled the number of presentations by the rest of the IIAC schools combined.

Demers to pursue Masters in Microbiology

Ludy is Featured Speaker at International Conference

Robbie Ludy, Professor of Special Education, was a featured speaker for the 2009 International Council for Exceptional Children Conference in Seattle, Washington. This conference hosts more than 5,000 people from around the world. Dr. Ludy's topic "Value Judgment: Innovative Teacher Evaluation Practices was one of only thirteen presentations featured in a special forum designed specifically for beginning professionals. Additionally, Dr. Ludy was noted in the program for her work as a program reviewer for the Division of International Special Education Services.

Foreman Awarded NSF Research Fellowship in Functional Nanomaterials and Nanoscience

Congratulations to Keith Foreman for being awarded a National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates Fellowship in Functional Nanomaterials and Nanoscience at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Keith will receive a $5,000 stipend and free room and board to carry out research for 10 weeks in the laboratory of Dr. Shireen Adenwalla. Keith will be working on the characterization, development and control of a new class of semiconductors based on icosahedral building blocks and epitomized by the semiconductor boron carbide.

Congratulations to BVU students Jason Jacobs and Tyonia Zimmerman who have been selected to participate in the Minnesota Vikings Game Day Internship Program next fall. Jason and Ty will be the first students to take part in the exciting new internship partnership between BVU and the Vikings Public Relations Department. The competitive program will allow qualified BVU students to work with the Vikings PR staff on game days, mostly assisting the local and national media covering the games. Students Selected for OEI

Four BVU students have been selected to participate in the 4th Okoboji Entrepreneurship Institute (OEI) held on the shores of West Lake Okoboji this coming summer. Students from Buena Vista University, Iowa State University, Iowa Lakes Community College, The University of Iowa, and University of Northern Iowa befriend and learn from Pappajohn Business Center faculty and lakes area entrepreneurs and participate in multi-period business simulation exercises culminating in a presentation to venture capitalists in hopes of selling their business endeavor in support of a new adventure. Hosted by the Iowa Lakes Corridor of Economic Development, students Anadin Tokmic, Sujana Regmi, Bikash Pandey, and Brianne Sweeden have been selected as BVU?s 2009 participants. Congratulations!

Lenzmeier publishes collaborative research paper

Dr. Brian Lenzmeier collaborated with Dr. Jin-Qiu Zhou and colleagues at the Shanghai Institutes of Biological Sciences to publish the paper "Histone Deacetylase Rpd3 Antagonizes Sir2-Dependent Silent Chromatin Propagation." This laboratory research project was initiated when Lenzmeier visited Zhou's laboratory in the summer of 2006. The manuscript describing their findings will appear this summer in the peer-reviewed journal Nucleic Acids Research.
RRWA Research and Education Grant

Sydney will be working with Dr. Melinda Coogan on developing a standardized wetland assessment protocol for volunteers in the state of Iowa and implementing a pilot program for Storm Lake area high school students interested in becoming volunteer wetland scientists.

School of Science Summer Research Fellowship Winners Announced

Congratulations to Cali Reiling and Michael Dirkx for being selected through a competitive process to receive Buena Vista University School of Science Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships. Cali's research proposal "Proline's effect on the enzymatic activity of catalase and peroxidase" and Michael's research proposal "The roles of the amino acid proline and the Put3 protein in responding to reactive oxygen species" were funded for an 8 week faculty-mentored research experience that will take place this summer in the Estelle Siebens Science Center.

Former BVU Student Receives Grant for Study Abroad in Israel

Lancaster awarded prestigious Mayo Clinic Summer Research Fellowship

Congratulations to BVU junior Ben Lancaster. Ben was one of 80 students selected from 933 applicants for admission to the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Ben will be paid $5,000 to participate in this program where he will spend 10 weeks working in Dr. Kah Whye Peng's laboratory in the virology and gene therapy department. Dr. Peng is best known for his engineering of Measles viruses that specifically attack and kill ovarian cancer cells.

Psychology Student and Professor Publish Article Together

Congratulations to Adrian Thomas (BVU Class of 2008) and Dr. Wind Goodfriend, Assistant Professor of Psychology. An empirical research article they wrote together has just been accepted for publication in the peer-reviewed journal "Modern Psychological Studies." The paper, titled "Ethnicity and abuse in intimate partner relationships: A Black and White examination," was written as a year-long project for Dr. Goodfriend's Research Thesis class last year. The article will come out in the journal's summer edition in a few months. Adrian is now earning her Master's Degree in Psychology at the University of Memphis.

Media Studies Students' Films Screened at Siouxland Film Festival

Three of our videos were selected for screening at the Siouxland Film Festival on Saturday, March 21 at the Orpheum Theatre in Sioux City. The documentary, "A Family's Fight for Hope" was selected for the evening screening at the festival. This documentary was directed and produced by Allissa Hopkins and me. It is about the Hermstad family's story with Alex. The music video, "This Life I Know" produced by Cody Fitzpatrick, was selected for the matinee screening at the festival. The documentary, "It's A Wonderful Profession" produced by Cody Fitzpatrick, was also selected for the matinee screening at the festival. This documentary follows a day in the life of a Special Needs teacher. Cody produced this video for Advanced Electronic Media Production.

Athletic Training Students Presenting at District Convention

A paper written by Dr. Lei Wen, "The Financial Services Modernization Act of 1999 and the Operating Performance at Large U.S. Banks" was accepted for the publication in the Journal of Money, Investment and Banking (JMIB). The Journal of Money, Investment and Banking (JMIB) is a bi-monthly, peer-reviewed international research journal. The acceptance rate of the JMIB is 20 percent.
Mathematics Majors Excel on ETS Major Field Test

Congratulations to this year's senior mathematics majors. On the nationally normed ETS Major Field Test in Mathematics, this year's group ranked at the 94th percentile nationally. This compares with an exceptional performance at the 86th percentile for last year's seniors, and a very respectable 65th - 70th percentile score since 2001 when the BVU mathematics program first began utilizing this assessment vehicle. Congratulations also to Ms. Gail Hartsock, who paced the group by scoring at the 98th percentile nationally, the highest score achieved by a BVU student since the exam was first administered.

Wical and Coogan to present pollution study

BVU senior Todd Wical and Dr. Melinda Coogan, assistant professor of biology, will present a report on Todd's research of water quality and aquatic life in the Raccoon River on March 7 at a conference of the Raccoon River Watershed Association (RRWA) at the west campus of Des Moines Area Community College. The presentation will be from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Last year, Todd received an RRWA grant to expand his research on the impact of pollution in tributaries of the Raccoon River. He had started his research in the fall 2007 semester in a class taught by Coogan. His project focused on the environmental impact of Outlet Creek, a Raccoon River tributary that originates at Storm Lake. Coogan is an RRWA board member.

Another paper written by Dr. Lei Wen, " The Loan Loss Reserve, Commercial Lending and the Prediction of Return on Assets in Small U.S. Banks from 1988-2008" was accepted for publication in Journal of International Finance and Economics (JIFE). The JIFE is a refereed publication listed in Cabell’s Directories 2003-10 Editions and in Ulrich’s International Periodicals Directory since 2003. The JIFE has the ISSN (ISSN: 1555-6336) and the Call Number (HG3879.J6772) issued by the Library of Congress, Washington. In addition, this paper was accepted for presentation at the IABE-2009 Greece- Summer Conference in Thessaloniki, Greece, June 05-07, 2009. A paper written by Dr. Lei Wen, “The Empirical Analysis of Strategic Change and Origin of Top Management Successor” was accepted for the publication in the Review of Financial and Accounting Studies (RFAS). The Review of Financial and Accounting Studies (RFAS) is an international referred journal based in Europe and is dedicated to publish original academic research in finance and accounting.

Congratulations to Dr. Wind Goodfriend, Assistant Professor of Psychology, who had a research article published in this month's issue of "Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin." The article is titled "Sunken costs and desired plans: Examining different types of investments in close relationships." This project includes a series of three empirical studies exploring how couple members stay in relationships, even when satisfaction is low, if they feel that breaking up would cause them to lose investments they have put into that relationship. Todd Campbell, a 2006 Buena Vista University graduate from Sac City, Iowa, is the National Rural Vote Director for Barack Obama's presidential campaign. Todd went to work for the Obama campaign in May 2007 in northern Nevada. During the primary season he worked in Colorado, Nebraska, Texas and Oregon before being named National Rural Vote Director. Todd was mentioned in the Des Moines Sunday Register on September 28 in an article about the presidential campaign and rural issues.

Wical Receives Honorable Mention

As one of 510 national applicants, Todd Wical received an Honorable Mention from the Morris K. Udall Scholarship and Excellence in National Environmental Policy. This foundation was authorized by Congress in 1992 to honor Congressman Udall's legacy of public service, and for 2008, 80 scholarships and 51 honorable mentions were awarded. BVU Summer Science Research Winners

Congratulations to Grant Turner and Todd Wical, who have been awarded summer science research grants from BVU for the summer of 2008. Their selection was based on a competitive process which included a review of thoroughly documented research proposals developed and submitted by the student applicants. Mr. Turner will be working with Dr. Robb Dunbar on imaging effects of propofol on hippocampal GABA-a receptors. Mr. Wical will work with Dr. Melinda Coogan to investigate and model Escherichia coli, nitrate, and phosphate levels within Outlet Creek, Iowa.

Abby McDonald Awarded Prestigious Graduate Fellowship

Abby McDonald was recently awarded a 3M Fellowship to pursue her Ph.D. in Molecular, Cellular and Structural Biology (MCSB program) at the University of Minnesota. Abby was awarded a full tuition waiver and a departmental annual stipend of $24,500. In addition to her normal stipend, Abby will receive an extra $26,000 in salary from 3M that will be spread out over four years. Please congratulate Abby on an exceptional achievement!

Marshall Earns Internship from Children's Theatre Education Internship

Leah Marshall, a Theatre and English Education major, has received a paid internship for this summer from the Children's Theatre Education Internship at Spencer Community Theatre. Leah will be responsible for creating and implementing the children's theatre educational programming within the guidelines of the current curricula. She will serve as Production Manager for the younger children's theatre production, implement subsidiary educational workshops, give tours to touring children's theatre groups, and work with parents of the children's theatre group. Through this internship, Leah was also offered the position of Director for the Young Children's Production of "AristoCats." Congratulations Leah!

Nagel to attend biostatistics summer institute

Congratulations to BVU sophomore Kayla Nagel. She was recently selected through a highly competitive process to participate in the University of Wisconsin Madison Summer Institute in Biostatistics. While in Madison Kayla will take part in a comprehensive six-week program for undergraduates in math and the quantitative sciences that introduces principles and applications of statistical methods in biomedical research. Kayla's tuition, room and board, and textbooks are paid for through a grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

Colleen Gerow placed third in Information Management. Samantha Jackson placed first in Macroeconomics, second in Microeconomics and fourth in Financial Analysis & Decision Making. His grant application "Study of Organosulfur Self-Assembled Monolayers on Gallium Arsenide Using Sum-Frequency Generation" was funded by the National Science Foundation / Northern Plains Undergraduate Research Center. Todd Wical to Present Research Project

Todd Wical has been invited to present his Raccoon River Watershed research project to the Raccoon River Watershed Association Board Members, Group Chairs, and community members in Des Moines on Saturday, March 1. The meeting will be held at DMACC with the focus being the aquatic health of this important watershed. Todd will be one of nine other conservationists, naturalists, professors, and governmental representatives who will also present data on the health of the Raccoon River.
