Admissions Requirements - Graduate Programs

Requirements

  • Hold a Baccalaureate degree from a regionally-accredited institution of higher learning.
  • Have a 2.75 undergraduate grade point average. Students with less than a 2.75 cumulative undergraduate grade point average may apply for admission consideration. To do so all the same materials below are required plus documentation of analytical writing ability (minimum of two samples or a portfolio of writing) or an admission’s interview with one or more members of the Organizational Leadership Program Council.
  • Submit official transcripts from all institutions of higher learning previously attended.
  • Complete a graduate application form.
  • Submit two letters of recommendation from academic personnel equipped to speak to the candidate’s preparation for graduate study.
  • Have access to minimum technology requirements.
  • Be accepted. Students will be notified in writing of the decision by the Organizational Leadership Program Director.

BVU Plus One Program Admissions Requirements

Prospective students who are within 30 hours of completing a Baccalaureate degree at Buena Vista University may seek early admission which allows students to apply up to 6 credits earned while still an undergraduate to the Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership degree. If accepted, the two courses are applied toward the degree completion requirements for both undergraduate and graduate degrees. See course descriptions for courses eligible to be taken as an undergraduate. The student must possess a 3.0 GPA in his/her undergraduate major coursework to be granted permission to take the graduate level courses while yet an undergraduate. Such early admission is provisional. See Provisional Admission Status.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum undergraduate college GPA of 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale).
    Applicants who cannot meet this requirement may be considered for probationary admission status and may enroll in up to nine hours of graduate study at BVU. These applicants will be reviewed at that time and pending successful completion of these nine hours (at least a "B" in each course), may be granted full status.
  • Copy of a valid K-12 teaching certificate or license.

How To Apply

  1. Complete the online application form, including auto-biographical statements.
      Autobiographical questions:
    • Describe significant personal and/or professional experiences that influenced you to pursue the counseling profession.
    • Describe a time when you advocated for or demonstrated leadership in something that mattered to you.
    • Discuss messages you have received from your family of origin about people who were different from you and how your attitudes and experiences as an adult do or do not reflect those messages.
    • Discuss what you anticipate will be the most challenging aspect of becoming a counselor.
    • In entering a field dedicated to helping others, discuss how you would take care of yourself or attend to your well-being.
  2. Obtain 3 letters with supportive endorsement or recommendation from:
    • Three letters of recommendation from supervisors, colleagues or former university instructors are required to complete your application package. Please print this form and submit to the Graduate Program Office after completion. Letters of recommendation are due prior to the application deadline to be eligible for consideration. Download the letter of recommendation form.
  3. Prepare for and take the BVU analytical writing assessment test, as arranged by the graduate specialist following submission of the application.

Application Timeline

A new cohort begins each August. Applicants are encouraged to submit application materials as early as possible. Priority will be given to applications submitted before March 15. After March 15, applications will be considered on a rolling basis.

    • Describe significant personal experiences that influenced you to pursue the counseling profession.
    • Describe significant professional experiences that influenced you to pursue the counseling profession.
    • Discuss how you would make a contribution as a professional school counselor to the counseling profession, both within a local school district and the profession at large or as a mental health counselor to the counseling profession both within the local community and the profession at large.
  2. Obtain 3 letters with supportive endorsement or recommendation from:
    • Three letters of recommendation from supervisors, colleagues or former university instructors are required to complete your application package. Please print this form and submit to the Graduate Program Office after completion.
