    You will find BVU Master of Science in Education graduates making a difference as professional school counselors in elementary, middle and high schools across the Midwest.   Anyone graduating with a baccalaureate degree can become a professional school counselor. 

    You will also find these program features helpful:

    • Empowers you, with its strong focus on application, to “hit the ground running” upon completion of the 37 hour program
    • Equips you with a solid and secure foundation for a career as a professional counselor; supported and accredited by the North Central Association for colleges and the Iowa Department of Education
    • Connects you to mentors, colleagues, and resources to ensure your growth and success as a professional school counselor
    • Hybrid program. Courses are online with the addition of a two-day, face-to-face session to be held the 2nd weekend of each term on the site campus.
    A new cohort begins each January. Submit your application by November 15.

    How to Apply

    Admissions Requirements

    • Bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree
    • A minimum undergraduate college grade point average (GPA ) of 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale)
    • The BVU analytic writing assessment (administered by BVU staff)
    • Three letters of recommendation from specified sources
    • Official paper transcripts, from any institution attended as well as any graduate transcripts, sent directly to:

    Application Process

    1. Complete the online application form, including auto-biographical statements.

    2. Answer three autobiographical questions:
    • Describe significant personal experiences that influenced you to pursue the counseling profession.
    • Describe significant professional experiences that influenced you to pursue the counseling profession.
    • Discuss how you would make a contribution as a professional school counselor to the counseling profession, both within a local school district and the profession at large or as a mental health counselor to the counseling profession both within the local community and the profession at large.

    2. Obtain 3 letters with supportive endorsement or recommendation from:

    Three letters of recommendation from supervisors, colleagues or former university instructors are required to complete your application package. Please print this form and submit to the Graduate Program Office after completion. Letters of recommendation are due prior to the application deadline to be eligible for consideration. Download the letter of recommendation form.

     4. Prepare for and take the BVU analytical writing assessment test, as arranged by the graduate specialist following submission of the application.

    Financial Aid


    TEACH Grant

    The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program provides up to $4,000 per year in grants for graduate and undergraduate students to students who intend to teach full-time in high-need subject areas for at least four years at schools that serve students from low-income families. Students must meet all eligibility requirements.


    Loans are made to students at low interest rates and must be repaid, but generally payments are not due until the student has completed his or her education or ceases at least half-time enrollment.


    After all financial assistance is applied to the student account, students will be expected to pay the balance prior to the first class meeting. Students may pay:
