Beginning with the summer of 2006, students who worked fulltime hours for BVU during the summer were not charged summer housing. This benefit will once again be offered to students this summer, however to be eligible, students must work an average of 30 hours a week, this is the minimal requirement. The required hours is not 40 hours due to the increase in minimum wage, thus decreasing the amount of hours some areas have available to hire individuals. Since June 30, 2006, Buena Vista University has been in compliance with the Internal Revenue Service, Code 119 regarding summer lodging. Code 119 requires that any lodging furnished to employees must be reported as wages by the employee and therefore taxed accordingly. For the summer of 2012, the total summer lodging equals $950.00, which will be split over 6 pay periods. Four pay periods will be taxed on wages of $158.33 and two pay periods will be taxed on wages of $158.34. The amount of taxes taken out will vary depending on the student’s claimed tax allowances. All students residing on campus for the summer will be housed in the residence halls as directed by Student Services. Students must apply for rooms through Student Services as has been done in the past. If a student fails to work the required number of hours consistently, they will be charged for the room. Students have randomly had weeks short of the required hours due to family vacations or other reasons. As long as they have their supervisor’s approval, this will not negate their summer housing benefit.
