BVU Theatre to Present

Buena Vista University Theatre is presenting a version of Anton Chekhov’s play, “Three Sisters”.

Performances of the play will take place April 23, 24, 25 and 26 at 7:30 p.m. in Anderson Auditorium on the BVU campus. “Three Sisters” will be directed by Dr. Bethany Larson, associate professor of theatre, with scenic design by David Walker, assistant professor of theatre; lighting design by BVU student Tyler Klobassa, a senior computer science – information technology major from Nashua; and costume design and crew chief responsibilities handled by BVU student Matthew Schulz, a freshman theatre major from Waverly.

Written in 1900 by Anton Chekhov, “Three Sisters” features the lives and aspirations of the Prozorov family, three sisters Olga, Masha and Irina and their brother Andrey. Irina longs to return to Moscow with her sisters, Olga and Masha, as they remember it as a happier time, but somehow time consumes desire while life is being lived.

The version of the play that BVU will present was translated by Julius West and has been abridged and adapted by Larson for time constraints, to modernize the language, and to allow for introduction of some popular American music from the late nineteenth century.

“The allure of the ‘big city’ and the desire for excitement are well-known to us today, as many of our best and brightest head to Des Moines, Chicago and points beyond,” said Larson. “But what happens to those who stay? ‘Three Sisters’ was written over 100 years ago, and yet it speaks to contemporary audiences about love, desire, foolishness and heartbreak.”
