The Buena Vista women's basketball team couldn't quite overcome a rough second half shooting performance on Saturday afternoon, as the Beavers dropped their first league game of the season, falling 64-57 at Luther College (4-9, 1-3 IIAC).

Junior Brooke Wehle made three long range buckets and finished with a game-high 16 points, finishing just three shy of her season high.  Senior Jessica Christensen turned in 11 points and seven rebounds, while Laura Hilby chimed in with 10 points and five boards.

The Beavers led for the majority of the first half, including a 31-21 advantage with less than five minutes to go.  The Norse, however, closed the period on a 10-2 run with BVU taking a 33-31 lead into halftime.

The surge continued for Luther at the start of the second half as it used a 20-3 run out of the gate and build the largest lead by either team in the game at 51-36 midway through.

BVU clawed its way back within eight just minutes later before Wehle nailed a three-pointer to get the Beavers as close as five with just over a minute remaining.  That proved to be as close as the team was able to get, with Luther converting all four free-throws down the stretch.

BVU finished the game shooting just 32 percent for the game and just 26 percent over the final 20 minutes.  Luther held a slight edge on the defensive end (44-42).

Taylor Johnson had a big game for the Norse, scoring 29 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.

Buena Vista dips to 8-5 overall (3-1 IIAC) and will return to the court on Wednesday night when the team hosts Simpson College at 6:00pm.
