Women's Basketball Topped by Dubuque 64-54

Senior Amanda Roder (Remsen, Iowa/St. Mary’s) recorded her first career double-double on Wednesday night against the University of Dubuque, scoring a team-high 14 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, while junior Brooke Wehle (Denison, Iowa/Denison-Schleswig) turned in 11 points and three steals, but it was the Spartans holding on in the end for a 64-54 Iowa Conference victory inside of the Stoltz Sports Center.

Roder finished 5-of-13 from the floor and made all three free-throw attempts in 24 minutes.  Wehle knocked down all four of her attempts from the charity stripe and added another of the team’s three-point buckets in the game.  Laura Hilby (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) and Susan Kies (Fonda, Iowa/Newell-Fonda) were close behind with eight points each, as Kies also dished out a team-best four assists.

As a team, the Beavers were held to just 26 percent shooting from the field, despite making 18-of-20 shots at the free-throw line.

The Spartans jumped out to an early 16-4 lead and maintained that double-digit lead for the remainder of the half, leading by as many as 14 before, and taking a 31-19 margin into the break.

Dubuque then pushed the lead to 16 four minutes into the second half before the Beavers began to make a late-game push.  A bucket by Tara Lehner (Le Mars, Iowa/Le Mars) with less than nine minutes on the clock brought BVU back to seven at 39-32.  Back-to-back baskets then put the Spartans back up 11 and the Beavers were unable to get any closer than seven until scoring five straight points, capped by Roder’s only three-pointer of the game, and pulling within 53-48 with 2:27 left.

A three-point play by Dubuque on the next possession put the Spartans back up by eight, and BVU was unable to pull any closer than that margin the rest of the way.

Mollie Whiting scored a game-high 17 points to help lead Dubuque (9-8, 4-4 IIAC), while Heather Taylor also finished with a double-double, scoring 15 points and hauling in 10 rebounds.

Buena Vista is now 8-9 on the year (3-5 IIAC) and will get a little break, as the team doesn’t take the floor again until traveling to Wartburg College (13-4, 6-2 IIAC).
