The Buena Vista women’s basketball team suffered its first home loss of the season on Wednesday night, as it fell to Simpson College (11-4, 4-2 IIAC), 82-69.

Senior Amanda Roder (Remsen, Iowa/St. Mary’s) led the Beavers with 15 points and seven rebounds, while fellow senior Jessica Christensen (Turin, Iowa/West Monona) finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.  Susan Kies (Fonda, Iowa/Newell-Fonda) and Laura Hilby (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) also finished with 10 points, as the Beavers shot 36 percent from the field.

The game was back-and-forth in the early going with the Beavers holding a 14-13 lead four minutes in.  Simpson then used a 16-3 spurt to go up 10 with 12 minutes left.  The Storm then bumped the advantage up to 15 at 38-23 with under eight minutes to go and led 44-33 at the half.

BVU quickly pulled back within seven less than two minutes into the second half on a jumper from junior Brooke Wehle (Denison, Iowa/Denison-Schleswig).  Christensen then nailed down a jumper a minute later to get the Beavers as close as six.  Simpson then used an 8-2 run to go back up 12 four minutes later and BVU got no closer than nine from there.

Simpson out-rebounded BVU in the contest, 51-33.  Stacey Schutjer finished with a game-high 19 points and 13 rbounds for the Storm, who were the coaches’ preseason favorites to win the IIAC title.

Buena Vista moves to 8-6 overall (3-2 IIAC) and will now head back on the road this Saturday to play Coe College (11-4, 5-1 IIAC).  Tip-off in Cedar Rapids is scheduled for 4:00pm.
