The Buena Vista softball team hosted third-ranked Coe College in an Iowa Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, and it was the Kohawks using a couple big innings in each contest to help them complete the sweep, winning game one 7-0 before taking game two, 11-2.

Coe got on the board in the second inning of the opener with a home run to left center field before going up 2-0 with a run in the fourth.  It was still 2-0 until the sixth when Coe plated five runs on five hits, including a two-run home run to right center and a two-run double to right.

Brooke Berkey, Jessica Stocker and Jordon Pilcher all tallied a hit for the Beavers, who were held to only three.

Chancey Wilcke suffered the loss on the mound, going the distance, allowing only three earned runs on 10 hits, while striking out two.

Coe, which entered the day with 25 home runs as a team on the year, used the long ball to its advantage again in the finale, belting five of them, including four in the seventh inning alone to break open a 6-2 game.

The Kohawks scored an unearned run in the second and got three more runs in the third to take a 4-0 lead.

The Beavers, however, cut the deficit in half with two runs of their own in the fourth to make it 4-2.  Stocker doubled to left center to drive in the first run before Stephanie Hayden lined a ball off the left fielder’s glove to score Sam Engleman from third.

Coe then got a two-run home run in the sixth to make it 6-2 before tallying a pair of back-to-back home runs in the seventh for the game’s final score.

Aphton Roberts finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored for BVU, which tallied eight base hits in the contest.

Jami Webster took the loss on the mound, pitching 5.2 innings, allowing seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits, while striking out three.  Wilcke came on in relief and totaled 1.1 innings, allowing four runs on four hits.

Buena Vista is now 11-9 on the year (1-3 IIAC) and will be right back in IIAC action on Tuesday afternoon, April 10, for a road doubleheader against Cornell College.  First pitch of game one is scheduled for 4:00pm.
