The 2013 Capital One Academic All-District Teams have been announced, and Buena Vista sophomore softball player Stephanie Hayden (Prairie City, Iowa/PCM) has been voted to the District 8 First Team.
Hayden, an accounting and management major, was one of four outfielders selected and also one of four Iowa Conference players represented. Of the 12 players named to the team, only three were sophomores.
The teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Capital One has been the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA’s Academic All-America teams programs since 2011.
First Team selections will now advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-American honorees will be announced later this month.
To be eligible for Academic All-District recognition, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in athletic standing, hold a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale and be either a starter or a key reserve on the varsity team.
For the year, Hayden leads BVU and is ranked 10th among all Iowa Conference players in batting average (.375) and on-base percentage (.441). She’s second on the team with 19 runs scored and third with 14 RBI.
Hayden looks to become the program’s eighth CoSIDA Academic All-American, but the first since Andi Royster was a First Team selection in 1998.
