The Buena Vista softball team began its Iowa Conference schedule on Wednesday afternoon, and the Beavers came up short twice at #15 Coe College, falling 1-0 in the opener before being dealt an 8-0 (5 inn.) setback in the finale.
In what was a pitcher's duel in the opener, the Kohawks went on to score the game's only run in the third inning on a two-out RBI single to center.
BVU, which was held to three hits in the contest, had just two base runners through the first five innings. The team tried to rally in the sixth with runners at first and second, but a strikeout ended the threat.
Sophomore Jessica Stocker singled to lead off the seventh, but was stranded there.
Freshman Jenna Falline (Newell, Iowa/Newell-Fonda) suffered the hard-luck loss after going the distance and allowing just five hits and striking out three.
The Kohawks (20-2, 2-0 IIAC) then came out in game two and scored three times in the first and twice more in the second for a 5-0 lead. They later posted a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to reach the 8-run rule.
Brooke Berkey and Erin Kliefoth each doubled and finished with two hits, as the Beavers tallied six total in the contest.
Britney Kubik was charged with the loss after allowing three runs on two hits and walking two in one inning of work. Faith Schmidt came on in relief and pitched the final 3.2 innings.
Buena Vista is now 9-11 overall (0-2 IIAC) and will look to bounce back when it plays its 2013 home openers this Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader against Wartburg College starting at 2:00pm.
