Buena Vista got a 71-yard touchdown run from sophomore Dylan Barrett (Harlan, Iowa/Harlan) and a 46-yard touchdown pass from Bobby Brown (Storm Lake, Iowa/Storm Lake) to Logan Lehrkamp (Carroll, Iowa/Carroll), but Concordia College-Moorhead (2-0) finished with 634 yards to knock off the Beavers on Saturday afternoon, 38-14.
The Cobbers jumped out to the 14-0 halftime lead with a 92-yard drive late in the first quarter before a capping a 91-yard drive three minutes into the second quarter.
BVU kept Concordia from going in front by three touchdowns in the early going when junior Mason Nielsen intercepted a pass in the end-zone with under three minutes left in the half.
The Beavers got on the board on the first play from scrimmage to start the second half when Barrett took the hand-off and made a couple cuts before scampering 71 yards to the end-zone. The PAT was no good, and BVU trailed 14-6.
Concordia, which gained 537 of its yards on the ground, then responded on its ensuing possession, getting a 42-yard field goal to make it 17-6 before a 46-yard touchdown run with less than two minutes left in the quarter extended the margin to 24-6.
The Beavers, just like they did to start the third quarter, got a big touchdown to start the fourth when Brown and Lehrkamp hooked up from 46 yards out, and the two-point conversion pass from Brown to senior Gunnar Wyatt (Story City, Iowa/Roland-Story) was good, to make it a 24-14 contest.
Concordia, though, was just too much to stop on the ground, as they got touchdown runs of 50 and 2 yards for the game’s final scores.
BVU finished with 240 yards of total offense, including 78 yards on five carries from Barrett. Senior John Hill (Webster City, Iowa/Webster City) rushed 12 times for 30 yards.
Brown completed 10-of-27 attempts through the air for 147 yards and the one touchdown.
Lehrkamp finished with five of those catches for 97 yards, as senior Bo Darrow (Glenwood, Iowa/Glenwood) caught three passes for 31 yards.
Baun Baune, who rushed for 62 yards and three scores against the Beavers a year ago, carried the ball 25 times for 258 yards and one touchdown on Saturday. Quarterback Griffin Neal rushed 12 times for 93 yards, as the Cobbers had five players rush for at least 30 yards.
Neal also completed 7-of-12 through the air for 79 yards and one score.
Defensively, junior Brady Randall (Storm Lake, Iowa/Alta) and senior Nick Plueger (Le Mars, Iowa/Le Mars) each tallied career highs with 20 total stops, while freshman Kyle Arnold (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) was in on 10.
Buena Vista (0-2) is back on the road next Saturday when it will travel to #15 Bethel University (2-0) for a 1:00pm contest. The Royals blanked Wartburg College on Saturday, 21-0.
