Sophomore Nick Schlecht drives home the go-ahead run with an RBI triple in the 10th.

Schlecht's RBI Triple Helps Send Beavers Past Storm in Extras

Indianola, Iowa

Sophomore Nick Schlecht (Omaha, Neb./Skutt) came through with a big run-scoring triple to break a 1-1 tie in the 10th inning, before the Beavers added a key insurance run later in the inning to help hold off Simpson College, 3-1, to open the three-game weekend series on Friday night.

Sophomore Ryan Titman (Boone, Iowa/Boone) got the rally started with a lead-off single through the left side and then moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Weston Foxx (Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn) before Schlecht’s third three-bagger of the year.  After the Storm intentionally walked Ryan Scheetz (Omaha, Neb./Millard North) to put runners at first and third, sophomore Dylan Colo (Omaha, Neb./Millard North) came on to pinch hit for Jess Munsterman (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) and drove home the second run of the inning on a suicide squeeze to the first base side.

Senior James Stone (Des Moines, Iowa/Johnston), who came on in relief to pitch the final 2.1 innings, then worked around a lead-off walk and a one-out error in the bottom half for his second win of the year.

The Storm took the 1-0 lead in third on a passed ball, and that was the way the game stood until BVU tied it up with an unearned run in the eighth.  Foxx singled with one out and then moved up to second when Schlecht grounded out to first.  The Storm looked to be out of the inning before their centerfielder misplayed a fly ball off the bat of Scheetz, which scored Schlecht to tie things up at 1-1.

Foxx and Titman each finished with two hits in the contest, as BVU outhit the Storm, 8-4.  Foxx also stole his third base of the year.

Freshman Ian Grigsby (Gretna, Neb./Gretna) got the start and worked the first two innings before junior Griffin Hatten (Bancroft, Iowa/North Sentral Kossuth) came on to star the third and would go the next 5.2 innings, allowing an unearned run on three hits, while striking out five and walking four.  Stone allowed just one walk and struck out three in his team-leading ninth appearance of the year.

Buena Vista has now won four straight games overall and is 15-12 on the year (7-6 IIAC).  The same two teams will wrap up the series on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader which starts at 1:00pm.
