Buena Vista freshman right-hander Ian Grigsby (Gretna, Neb./Gretna) threw eight strong innings, allowing just two runs on four hits, while striking out seven, and the Beaver offense finally came through with a pair of runs in the eighth inning, to post a come-from-behind 3-2 triumph over the University of Dubuque to open the three-game weekend series.
Grigsby, who made his first career start a week ago and tallied a complete-game shutout, allowed only a run-scoring double in the fourth and a solo home run in the fifth.
BVU got on the board in the sixth when sophomore designated hitter Joe Paletta blasted a shot to deep right center field for his first home run of the year.
Jess Munsterman got the rally started in the eighth with a lead-off walk before moving to second on a Brock Yossi infield hit. Neil Eddie then bunted the two of them up one base before pinch hitter Eric Croghan sent a slow roller towards short and reached when the throw was in the dirt. Munsterman scored on the play to tie the game before Yossi stole home to give the Beavers the lead.
Senior James Stone came on to pitch the ninth and worked around a two-out single to pick up his second save of the year and the 14th of his career.
Yossi finished 2-for-4 with a run scored to help lead the Beavers, who tallied seven hits in the game.
The same two teams will be back out on the diamond tomorrow morning for a doubleheader beginning at 10:00am. The start time has been moved up from the originally scheduled 1:00pm twinbill due to the threat of severe weather later in the afternoon.
