The Buena Vista baseball team got more solid pitching on Saturday, as senior Michael Dirkx and sophomore Jon Ringblom each tossed complete-game shutouts, to help send the Beavers to 1-0 and 7-0 victories, respectively.
Dirkx scattered only five hits and struck out six in the opener, improving to 3-0 on the year. The Beavers got the game’s only run in the sixth when junior Ryan Scheetz doubled to right center field, scoring Brock Yossi, who had singled and stole second with one out.
Scheetz finished 2-for-3 at the plate, BVU was held to only five hits.
Ringblom picked up his team-leading fourth victory of the year in the finale, allowing just an infield single in the sixth inning, while walking three and striking out five.
BVU picked up a quick run in the first when Nick Schlecht tripled to deep center field with one out before scoring on Ryan Scheetz’s sacrifice fly. The Beavers then got some help from the Spartan defense in the third, scoring a run when the pitcher threw over the first baseman’s head on a pick-off attempt.
A sacrifice fly from Ryan Titman in the fourth made it 3-0 before more Neil Eddie scored after the catcher’s throw on a stolen base from Dillon Plath went into centerfield. Weston Foxx then drove home Plath, who moved up to third on the error, on a sacrifice fly to push the margin to 5-0.
Eddie and Foxx then captured RBI singles in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, for the game’s final runs.
Schlecht finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, while Scheetz, Eddie and Jesse Munsterman also turned in two hits each. BVU out-hit Dubuque, 12-1, in the contest.
Buena Vista is now 14-12 overall (6-6 IIAC), and will travel up north for a non-conference doubleheader at Gustavus Adolphus on Sunday afternoon beginning at 1:00pm.
