The Buena Vista baseball team plated 27 total runs on Saturday afternoon as it cruised to a doubleheader road sweep at Nebraska Wesleyan University, taking the opener, 8-2, before cruising to a 19-4 triumph in game two.

BVU jumped out to a 2-0 in game one by getting a pair of runs on two hits in the second inning.  Junior Ryan Scheetz (Omaha, Neb./Millard North) got the rally started with a lead-off double and later scored on an RBI groundout by freshman Jesse Munsterman (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter).  Weston Foxx (Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn) followed Scheetz with a single to center and  then moved up to second on a throwing error by the centerfielder.  He then scored two batters later when Neil Eddie (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna) grounded out to second.

Munsterman pushed the Beaver lead to 5-0 in the fourth with his first career home run – a three-run blast to left field, scoring sophomore Joe Paletta (Omaha, Neb./Millard South), as well as Scheetz, who each singled to start the inning.

Nebraska Wesleyan got two of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning on four hits.

Scheetz, who finished with a team-high three hits in the contest, added a run for BVU in the sixth with a solo home run to right.  Sophomore Dylan Colo (Omaha, Neb./Millard North) doubled in a run in the seventh, while freshman Alex Brown (Harlan, Iowa/Harlan) singled home another for the game’s final run.

Scheetz went 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored to pace the way offensively for the Beavers.  Munsterman was one of seven other players with one hit, while he also scored once and drove in four.

Sophomore Jon Ringblom (Omaha, Neb./Millard North) (3-1) went the distance for BVU on the mound, notching his third win and second complete-game outing of the year.  He allowed just the two runs on six hits, while striking out nine and walking none.

It was all Beavers in game two, as the team scored runs in each of the seven innings, including four runs in the first and sixth innings, to go along with five more in the seventh.

Five of the team’s season-high 20 base hits went for extra bases, including the second career-triple from Plath in the sixth and a pinch-hit two-run home run by sophomore Chad Sibigtroth (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo West) in the seventh, marking the first long ball in his career.

Colo finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored, while Paletta also added three hits, to go along with two RBI and a run scored.  Plath also drove in three runs, while chipping in with two hits and two runs scored.  Eleven different players chalked up at least one hit in the contest, including seven with at least two.

Senior Michael Dirkx (Carroll, Iowa/Carroll) tallied his first win of the year, going five innings, allowing three runs on six hits, while walking three and striking out two.  Freshman Ian Grigsby (Gretna, Neb./Gretna) came on in relief to work one scoreless inning, allowing just one hit and striking out two.  Griffen Hatten (Bancroft, Iowa/North Sentral Kossuth) also worked one inning, and allowed one run on two hits, while striking out two.

Buena Vista improves to 6-6 overall on the year, as the Prairie Wolves drop to 1-7.

The two teams will close out the three-game weekend series with one nine-inning game on Sunday beginning at 1:00pm.
