Baseball Drops Series Opener at Wartburg College

May. 5, 2012
Waverly, Iowa

After waiting out a four-hour weather delay prior to Friday night's first pitch, senior Michael Dirkx held Wartburg to only two hits, but it was the Knights scoring a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to edge the Beavers in the opener of the three-game weekend series, 2-1.

Buena Vista grabbed the 1-0 lead in the fifth when Ryan Titman singled home Neil Eddie with two outs.  Wartburg tied it in the sixth on a one-out RBI ground out before winning it in the ninth after taking advantage of a pair of Beaver errors.

Ryan Scheetz and Joe Paletta each tallied two hits, as BVU out-hit the Knights, 6-2.  Defensively, the Beavers committed two errors.

Dirkx allowed just the two hits and only one earned run in 8.1 innings, while striking out nine.

Buena Vista is now 19-17 overall (11-11 IIAC) and will look to win the series with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday.  Game one is scheduled to begin at 1:00pm.
