
The Buena Vista volleyball team picked up a 3-0 victory over Grinnell College (0-2) in Friday night’s season-opener before falling in four sets later in the night to UW-River Falls (2-0). The Beavers then wrapped up the two-day Northwestern (MN) Invite on Saturday with a pair of 3-0 setbacks against Wisconsin Lutheran (1-2) and Bethel (3-1), respectively.
Junior Chelsea Clayton (Early, Iowa/Ridge View) recorded a team-high 41 kills over the four matches, including a career-high 18 against the Pioneers on Friday. She also finished the weekend with six ace serves and 12 total blocks. Sophomore Kirsten Van Zuiden (Carroll, Iowa/Carroll), who was also named to the All-Tournament Team, was right behind Clayton with 35 kills, tallying 11 against Grinnell and 10 more against UW-River Falls.
Junior Jena Peters (Lake Park, Iowa/Harris-Lake Park) made her Beaver debut and turned in 18 kills, while sophomore Chelsea Gubbels (Carroll, Iowa/Kuemper Catholic) added 11 kills and 19 digs.
Sophomore Courtney Van Haaften (Alta, Iowa/Alta) chimed in with 74 assists, moving her past 1,200 for her career. She also added 16 digs and three ace serves.
Senior Bailey Schafbuch (Slater, Iowa/Ballard) registered a team-leading 29 digs, to go along with her four ace serves.
Buena Vista now heads to Bethany Lutheran College on Tuesday night for a non-conference match beginning at 7:00pm.
