The Buena Vista men’s golf team has three golfers sitting in the top-15 individually following Saturday’s second round of the Iowa Conference Men’s Golf Championships, hosted by Central College, at Bos Landen Golf Club. As a team, the Beavers, which posted an overall round of 320, sit in fifth.
Playing in significantly better conditions, four of the team’s five golfers bettered their score from Friday’s opening round. Senior Mitch Brunick (Sioux Falls, S.D./O’Gorman), who was tied for the individual lead heading into the day, shaved two strokes off his score and is tied for seventh place, only four shots back of the clubhouse leaders.
Kyle Auffert (Clarinda, Iowa/Clarinda) and Jaron Smool (Bagley, Iowa/Panorama) sit 14th and 15, respectively. Auffert posted a 79 as Smool finished with an 80 and the duo combined to improve by 11 shots. The two are only four strokes out of the top-10, which earn all-conference accolades. The Beavers haven’t had multiple individuals earn all-conference since 2008, and the team hasn’t had three in a single season since 1980.
Andrew Zinn (Spencer, Iowa/Spencer) shaved the most strokes off of any round for BVU, improving on his Friday round of 91 to shoot an 83 in round two. He’s currently tied for 30th, three shots ahead of teammate Troy Ticknor (Adel, Iowa/ADM), who turned in his second straight round of 88.
After an 83 to open the championships, Coe College’s Garrett Ross carded an even-par round of 71 on Saturday and finds himself tied with two others for the clubhouse lead.
In the team race, the host Dutch extended their lead to 19 after posting an overall mark of 302. Coe College sits in second after a round of 311, with the Beavers, who are fifth, sitting just six strokes back of the Kohawks.
The final two rounds of the championships will take place next Friday and Saturday (May 4-5) at Finkbine Golf Club in Iowa City. Friday’s round tees-off at 11:00am with Saturday’s final round to get underway at 9:00am.
