
The Buena Vista indoor track and field teams competed at the 2012 Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Cornell College, and the Beavers had one individual conference champ with sophomore Amber Riedy taking the pole vault title on Friday night.
Riedy posted a season-best effort of 3.20 meters to take the event for the second consecutive season. Also on Friday, the first day of the two-day event, the women’s 4x200 meter relay team of freshmen Casey James, Maggie Marker, Laura Eberly, as well as junior Rachel Burnette, placed third in a school-record time of 1:46.75. The old mark of 1:46.82 was set back in 2002.
Molly Hutchins captured a seventh-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 11.49 meters. Haley Henrichs just missed the finals while setting a personal record of 10.27 meters.
Over on the men’s side, the 4x200 meter relay was fifth in 1:33.28, while DJ Smith took part in the heptathlon and finished seventh with 3812 points. He was only 17 points out of sixth place. This marked the first time DJ has participated in a multi-event competition.
On Saturday, Marker placed eighth in the 60 meter dash in a time of 8.15 seconds after qualifying for the finals with a personal best time of 8.09 and was finished just over .1 seconds from fifth. James finished 9th in the 60 meter dash prelim just .12 seconds out of the finals. Marker later took eighth in the 200 meter dash, reaching the finish line in 26.55 seconds, which was more than a half second faster than her previous best.
Abby Hesnard (1:01.48) ran her fastest time of the year in the 400 meter dash and ended up eighth overall. Holly Neutzman ran more than four seconds faster in her 800 meter run, and just missed scoring points for the Beavers, as she finished ninth in 2:26.15, which was .15 seconds behind eighth. Burnette also chipped in with a seventh place effort in the 60 meter hurdles, reaching the finish line in 9.79. She had qualified eighth with her fastest time of the year at 9.55 seconds. She also anchored the 4x400 meter relay team which was fourth in a time of 4:09.48 also their fastest clocking.
Bridgett Hasche took her highest career championships finish by placing sixth in the weight throw with a heave of 12.58 meters. Freshmen Vanessa Fiechtner finished 9th in the high jump with a personal best of 1.50m (4’11).
Peter Winterton was fifth in the 60 meter dash on the men’s side with his time of 7.19 seconds. That clocking was only 0.09 seconds away from a top-three placing. Seth Woodson also scored points for BVU by taking seventh in the 800 meter run, but finishing less than three seconds off the winning time. Woodson’s time of 1:58.83 was a personal best time. The freshman has run three consecutive 800’s under the two minute barrier.
The 4x200 and the 4x800 meter relay teams were fifth, while the 4x400 team was seventh and the Distance Medley Relay team took eighth.
The Beavers finished with 29 combined men’s and women’s personal and season bests including two all-conference performances (Amber Riedy in the pole vault and the women’s 4x200 meter relay).
The Beaver women doubled their overall point total from a year ago and took eighth, just three points back of seventh.
The team will now take part in the ISU Last Chance Meet on Saturday, March 3, beginning at 10:00am.
